About this listen

Fablehaven Meets Wizard of Oz.

Open the door. We’re off to see the genocidal wizard.

After fires kill thousands all over the world in an instant, the few survivors are left with a symbol scorched into their lives and more questions than answers. Nick falls into the system. Cindy moves in with her godmother. They try move on, to forget.

But then water begins stalking Nick around high school, awakens latent synesthesia, and applies scents to the colors of a magic he didn’t know he had. Cindy, a weaver of fire, knows more, but not enough to prepare them for the appearance of a living portal.

They will cross this threshold to find answers to their parents’ murder, what their gifts mean, and what plans a magical serial killer has for the world. With the help of a feisty sylph and a sentient door, they just might make it, but only if they can survive the angry nixies, bloodthirsty redcaps, bone-crushing trow, and the friendship of a fairy queen who may not want them to succeed.

Fresh fantasy

I have always loved fairy stories, and this book was excellent. I really enjoyed the rich imagery and non-stop action. The narrator did a great job, especially with the sylph's brogue.

Fantastic Young Fantasy

This is my first with this author. It took me a bit to really enter in the story, but once I did, it was great.
In this magic world there are those that can weave magic as treads of colors. We follow the story from the point of view of a boy that just discovered his power and the young girl that will teach him the ropes.
The real adventure starts when the boy goes through the "blue door", that turns out to be another character, into this another magic world full of dangers.
Their mission will be to find and defeat the killer of their parents. So the adventures are only just starting but already they have epic fights and meet amazing creatures and characters.
Those are one of the many strong parts int he story. The narrator also is great at bringing them to life. His female voices could be improved a bit, and I would also liked more if he could use the same female voice when narrating from the girl point of view. But overall (specially for all the creatures and fairy voices) he is great.
A very great start for this young adult fantasy story that can appeal for all ages.

Incredibly inventive and fun family story

Everyone in my family was enthralled with this book. Great from start to finish! I started listening to this and when my kids heard part of it, they insisted I wait for them to listen to it too. Cinder (Cindy) was a great character because my teenager daughter thought she was cool ange loved that she was a strong and magical character. Nix (Nick) was likable and admirable in spite of all he'd been through and was still a happy guy (with a bit of colorful language). Thresh was a new kind of character with a sarcastic perspective but still probably my favorite. We can't wait for the next book!
