About this listen

Over the course of two award-winning collections and a critically acclaimed novel, The Croning, Laird Barron has arisen as one of the strongest and most original literary voices in modern horror and the dark fantastic. Melding supernatural horror with hardboiled noir, espionage, and a scientific backbone, Barron's stories have garnered critical acclaim and have been reprinted in numerous year's best anthologies and nominated for multiple awards, including the Crawford, International Horror Guild, Shirley Jackson, Theodore Sturgeon, and World Fantasy awards. Barron returns with his third collection, The Beautiful Thing That Awaits Us All. Collecting interlinking tales of sublime cosmic horror, including "Blackwood's Baby", "The Carrion Gods in Their Heaven", and "The Men from Porlock", The Beautiful Thing That Awaits Us All delivers enough spine-chilling horror to satisfy even the most jaded reader.

This list encompasses the full spectrum of what horror can be—campfire-worthy tales, stomach-churning gore, and incisive social commentary. The classics are accounted for, but it also spotlights more recent titles, because that’s the nature of the genre—it is as perennial as it is ever-evolving, conjuring whatever frights most haunt our collective consciousness. Each title does have one thing in common: It makes for devilishly good listening. So cut the lights and press play—if you dare.

I have no regrets.

This book was disturbing, gut-wrenching, and outright psychotic from the first to last word. Every time I hit play it was as though I was walking to see another car crash on the side of the road. I couldn't put it down, and I can't seem to forget. I recommend it to everyone who wants a different kind of experience with their dark side. I loved The Beautiful Thing That Awaits Us All.

I can't believe I put it down

I love Barren’s work and he will no doubt go down in history as one of literature’s masters of the genre alongside Poe, Jackson , King, Straub, Evenson, and Files.

True horror for horror lovers

some of the stories were pretty interesting, but most of it just felt like the same story with some slightly different details.
there was an insane amount of detail put into the pasts of most of the characters, but they still felt two dimensional.

not great

There’s could be no better reader for this excellent collection than Ray Porter. Barron is at the top of his game here, and hits every story out of the park. Porter renders them all distinctly and memorably. Turns out that the beautiful thing that awaited us all was this audiobook.

A match made in... well...

The stories were incredibly dark and some are downright disturbing. The common plot threads running through every short story created confusion at the chapter change. I was not a fan of the book.

Uber Grim

wonderfully raw and gritty. brings a certain amount of realism to the unreal. if you love his story bulldozer this will be right up your alley.
