Acerca de esta escucha

His good friend Mark Twain dubbed him "St. Andrew." British Prime Minister William Gladstone called him an "example" for the wealthy. Such terms seldom apply to multimillionaires. But Andrew Carnegie was no run-of-the-mill steel magnate. At age 13 and full of dreams, he sailed from his native Dunfermline, Scotland, to America. The story of his success begins with a $1.20-a-week job at a bobbin factory. By the end of his life, he had amassed an unprecedented fortune - and given away more than 90 percent of it for the good of mankind.

Here, in one volume, are two impressive works by Andrew Carnegie himself: his autobiography and The Gospel of Wealth, a groundbreaking manifesto on the duty of the wealthy to give back to society all of their fortunes. And he practiced what he preached, erecting 1,600 libraries across the country, founding Carnegie Mellon University, building Carnegie Hall, and performing countless other acts of philanthropy because, as Carnegie wrote, "The man who dies thus rich dies disgraced."

LOVED IT

Honest insight into the character of this great American who came to this country with no money. Hard work, vision and strong character brought home and others great wealth and great contributions to this country. Truly remarkable times to live in.

If you like history and biographies you will enjoy this book.

Great Historical Perspective

Carnegie illustrates the American dream as it was always imagined and demonstrates how hard work can conquer all. He also reminds prior to the advent of the welfare state that misplaced charity is cruelty, (a fact brutally evident today) and points out that equality is a genuinely bad thing compared to a society that allows any it’s citizens to rise to dizzying heights. Finally he makes the point summed up in the notion that he who dies rich, dies disgraced, that anyone who does attain means must strengthen the ladders upward for as many who would climb them.

Very insightful

Great narration. Andrew Carnegie is a true hero! I’m going to read his Round The World book next.

Amazing!

I had hoped and expected the book would provide more detail on Mr Carnegie’s business transactions, including his thought process at each time. I also did not get a sense of the full scope of his business interests.

Understandably, being an autobiography, all Mr Carnegie’s actions were described in a favorable way.

I was surprised at the considerable time he spent expressing his philosophical views of life and the distribution of wealth.

Not What I Expected

I liked the book and Mr. Carnegie's story. I thought the book was narrated well and it can easily be listened to at a faster pace without losing anything. I do think the book went into to details it did not need but overall it was well written.

Inspirational Man

A must-read for the contemporary capitalist minded person. The book and the essay are precious sources of socioeconomic wisdom by one of greatest industrial magnates of the Gilded age, who also embodies the American dream.

Andrew not only amounted to be one of the riches persons alive, he then went on to distribute his wealth to uplift the later generations by building ladders. The narration was great as well
