About this listen

Uptight elfin historian Brangwain Spurge is on a mission: survive being catapulted across the mountains into goblin territory, deliver a priceless peace offering to their mysterious dark lord, and spy on the goblin kingdom - from which no elf has returned alive in more than 100 years.

Brangwain's host, the goblin archivist Werfel, is delighted to show Brangwain around. They should be the best of friends, but a series of extraordinary double crosses, blunders, and cultural misunderstandings throws these two bumbling scholars into the middle of an international crisis that may spell death for them - and war for their nations.

A hilarious and biting social commentary that could only come from the likes of National Book Award winner M. T. Anderson and Newbery Honoree Eugene Yelchin, this tale is rife with thrilling action and a comic disparity that suggests the ultimate victor in a war is perhaps not who won the battles but who gets to write the history.

SO MUCH FUN!!!!!

This book is AMAZING!! It accurately portrays how prejudice can shape a person's view of their surroundings. Granted, it is from the perspective of an Elf and a Goblin, at the same time, how many times do we go to someone's house and view their customs as strange? If you said never, you haven't been to enough friend's homes.

I listened to the whole thing straight through without looking through the PDF the first time. The second time I looked at the PDF at the appropriate times. It gave a different perspective of the story and was equally funny. The difference of how Brangwain saw himself and his host and compared the Goblin culture to his own was delightful!!

I thoroughly enjoyed the book!! I highly recommend this book for middle school students and up.

Genius Satire + Amazing Narrator

First let me say that the guy who narrates this book deserves an award. The narrator is British which is quite fitting given this book uses British English.

The story is superb at times comical, sad, touching and more. The writing is impressive. I found myself amazed that the author pretty much never lets a scene go to waste without using it to further illustrate some point.

A note on the PDF
This book is structured such that some chapters are ONLY images from the PDF. Thus I missed certain parts as I just listened to it. If you’re getting this for kids just get a physical copy.

Summer fun.

I was going to spend some time in the mountains off line and wanted something light and entertaining. I don't usually listen to nonfiction, but found this delightful.

Not meant to be an audio book

I read this book via audiobook. While the story was quite enjoyable, it was not meant to be an audiobook. Several times the reader is instructed to “see page # of the bonus pdf”. Such instructions really pull the reader out of the story. Also, the pictures provided in the bonus pdf tell some of the story. Good story that is meant for paper or ebook only.
