They say every cloud has a silver lining....

When Freya Miller is struck by tragedy, losing her husband and her home within a short time, she is burdened with many worries. The main one being where she and her five-year old daughter, Skye, are going to live. A chance meeting with the charismatic Dr Marsden changes all that. He offers the young mother the most amazing opportunity: an apartment at one of London’s most exclusive addresses for a fraction of the market rental cost. It’s an offer Freya simply can’t refuse. Within a couple of weeks, Freya and Skye are moving into Adder House and meeting the other welcoming residents. They very quickly feel part of the family.

But just when Freya truly believes all her problems are history, a series of strange, unexplained occurrences begin. It leaves Freya with the unshakeable feeling that even when their apartment door is securely locked, she and her daughter are not alone. Freya thought she’d left all her troubles behind her, yet she soon realises there are problems here that are far more terrifying than before.

For behind the doors of Adder House, everything is most definitely not as it seems.

Old secrets refuse to stay buried, and someone is determined to keep a terrible past very much alive.

K.L. Slater

About the Creator

"I’ve learned that my readers don’t trust me one iota…readers are often suspicious from the very first page!" K. L. Slater is the author of psychological thrillers she describes as "tense with a sinister sense of building dread"—domestic noir stories that the reader or listener believes might happen to them, with a twist they don’t see coming. While still holding down a full-time job, Slater embarked upon an English and creative writing honors degree at Nottingham Trent University (UK), receiving first class honors. Part of her dissertation became a story called The Bridge. After finishing her MA, Slater successfully launched herself as an author of multi-award-winning Young Adult novels, writing as Kim Slater. But she found that the character of Anna (the protagonist from The Bridge) kept calling her back to finish her story. And so Slater gave both the character and the story new life in her first crime novel Safe with Me, her first novel as K. L. Slater. While she can often be found reading multiple books at once, she says she only ever writes one at a time as she becomes so immersed in each world, "occasionally it dawns on me that I do spend so many hours of my day in worlds that don’t exist."

Great “Gaslight” with a Twist!

This was my first K.L. Slater book. It had wonderful suspense. It truly reminded me of the classic movie Gaslight, but with a twist. I certainly didn’t guess whodunnit. I’ll definitely be reading/listening to another! I feel a psychological thriller/suspense binge coming on. I truly loved Tuppence Middleton’s narration, with the exception of little Skye’s voice. She did so well with the rest, I hesitate to criticize. Yet, Skye sounded more like an evil old lady than a young girl. I even got a second and a third opinion in my household. My husband said he didn’t know about evil, but definitely old. My son said “old witch.” That’s probably the best description. She did such an amazing job otherwise, I eventually didn’t even notice quite as much. It’s beyond me how any of the narrators keep the voices straight when switching back and forth. I often wondered if they read each voice separately and they were then all put together. Yet, there’s a wonderful video of her recording the book, and she read right through it, switching voices before my eyes. I’d certainly recommend this one!

Not my cup of tea

Long, dragged. I could not get into it and British mysteries are my thing. I was super stoked to buy this but did not enjoy it much. Disappointed

Solid 2.5-3 read

Interesting psychological thriller that uses a mother and her child as the focal parts for the story. I thought the author did a very good job in describing the characters and the narration quality allowed you to be drawn right into the story. My only negative were the flashbacks to the past. It wasn't until the last third of the book, did I start to understand the impact and usage of the flashbacks. If the author could have developed why the flashbacks were needed earlier, for me that would have helped where I felt the story went off point.

Pretty good

The story was interesting, had some nice twists. The narration was good except for the voice the narrator used for the girl. That drove me crazy and I found myself making faces every time she spoke. It almost ruined the book.

A bit too simple easy to listen but a bit boring. Not a grabbing plot

Interesting premise but a little simple

Interesting idea but kind of simple. I think it could have been longer/more involved and it would have had more of an impact. Ended quickly and neatly too.

Just ok

I felt like it was a slow build and then it was just over. I didn’t hate the book but I didn’t love it

Yes a Psychologist Thriller

This is the third book I have read by Ms Slater. It’s everything a psychological thriller should be. It was scary, I definitely couldn’t predict the ending and I am left shaken. I think that I am going back to plain mysteries or even romantic suspense.
