The Truth Will Come Out

A careful selection of the best from the Sherlock Holmes stories with superb narration. Reader is immersed in the storyline from the beginning of each.

Holme reading

Very good narrative to some wonderful tales, albeit a bit too short. More tales please

Classic tale well told!

I love the Sherlock Holmes tales, and enjoyed hearing them. The narrator handled all his different voices skillfully, which let me focus on the story instead of my annoyance with inconsistent character styles.

This is the seventh audiobook I've listened to, and the best read one. (The only other one that came close was Stephen King's reading of his own book, On Writing.)

Great traveling book

We loved listening to Sherlock Holmes, the only problem is picking up where we left off. It's been a struggle to find our stopping point, so have listened to a few stories several times.

Great narration, but missing a couple

Simon Prebble does an excellent job narrating this first collection of Sherlock Holmes stories. No complaints there. But the collection is marred by Tantor's decision to omit the two stories (Speckled Band and Red-Headed League) they'd already made available as "bonuses" on two of the novels.

In other words, if you want all of the short stories, you have to buy the whole set of recordings, including the four novels. (I'm planning to do that, but others may have preferred not to.) There's something to said, too, for being able to listen to the stories in their published sequence. This unfortunate marketing ploy makes that less convenient.

Simon Prebble Is a Genius

The stories are what the stories are. Any you don’t like, you already know you don’t like. The man created a genre. Many are ingenious, some unpleasant. Don’t be dumb enough to call any of them cliche. It’s like accusing Shakespeare of cliches. Not as lofty, but yes, they weren’t cliches when he first wrote them. I’m here to write about Simon Prebble, the narrator. A gorgeous sonorous voice that never calls attention to itself, yet pleases, excites, and reassures. A man who speaks women in a way that makes you forget he’s a man. I keep playing for my friends the moment when there are three men in the room, Holmes, Watson, and a young client, and I keep forgetting there is only one man in the room: Simon Prebble. I can’t thank you enough Mr. Prebble for the joy you’ve given me, the excitement, and the hope for audio theatre.

Superb performance except ...

... for the transition between stories. There is not a heartbeat of pause between the end of one story and the beginning of the next one. As a result, I usually thought at first that the new story was a continuation of the preceding one.

This version is complete

Any additional comments?

I don't want to nitpick Tad's excellent review, but he is inaccurate on one point.

This version, as of April 2012, includes all twelve short stories collected in 1892 as "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes", including "The Red-Headed League," and "The Adventure of the Speckled Band."
