About this listen

In 1983, the world stands at the brink of nuclear annihilation, and only a few people are aware of it. A riveting story of how two men’s lives intersect in the midst of an existential crisis, The Able Archers is told through the eyes of two key participants: a young American intelligence officer, Captain Kevin Cattani, and his more experienced Soviet counterpart, Colonel Ivan Levchenko.

The story plays out from the skies over Siberia to the gritty, dangerous streets of East Berlin. The radically different world views of Cattani and Levchenko punctuate the deep divisions of the Cold War. The evolving relationship between the two men also highlights the humanity common to both sides. Only by working together will Cattani and Levchenko find a way to prevent a global nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union.

Great

For me, it was a part of history I lived. The carrier group in the Sea of O reminded me of Ranger sneaking up the west coast of Korea and starting air ops just after the Pueblo was taken. Sure miss the days of being able to sneak a carrier group up towards an adversary

Good story, poor performance

Knowing bits and pieces of this history, it was extremely interesting tying it all together. Unfortunately, I don’t think the readers were up to the task of convincing the audience of the gravity of the situation. Several different times I found myself distracted by the 4th grade level reading cadence of the actors. Overall, I’d still recommend the book as it’s possible I’m just more sensitive than others to the cadence, and the history lesson is worth it.

Good Listen!

Very well constructed retelling of a seemingly unimaginable time in history where the world was closer than ever to nuclear extinction.

Fascinating story

I thought this book might be difficult to read because of all the names and technical terms. Instead, I found that the character development made each role memorable. I think it reads like a thriller screenplay. The dialogue is very believable, and the narrator does a good job at differentiating voices. I would love to read more by the same author it’s fast moving and I couldn’t put it down.

Great read about flight 007 big shot down in 1983

This book truly details how close we came to nuclear war after the downing of the Korean flight 007 in 1983. If not for the work of the Abel archers the world, as we know, it would have been a nuclear waste.

The Able Archers - an extraordinary book

This is truly an extraordinary account of how American, USSR, British and NATO forces worked together to de-escalate almost certain nuclear disaster by a hair’s breath. An amazing book. I look forward to seeing the movie!

Great fiction with a LOT of nonfiction told from the perspective of both sides during the cold war period
