Nous retrouvons ici les protagonistes de cette affaire aux ramifications innombrables : la tribu Malaussène, mais aussi bien sûr la Reine Zabo, toujours impériale, divers policiers au flair plus ou moins sûr, la ""Justice à la main de fer"" incarnée par Verdun Malaussène devenue juge d'instruction, un écrivain d'autofiction détenteur de secrets particulièrement inflammables, et surtout un personnage qui va prendre dans cette ultime aventure une place centrale : le mystérieux et terrible Pépère, incarnation du Mal d'autant plus redoutable qu'on ne peut s'empêcher de l'admirer, et même, c'est triste à dire, de l'aimer.
Daniel Pennac interprète avec jubilation cette intrigue policière loufoque, où se croisent tous les personnages de la saga Malaussène.
