Winner of the Grand Prize for Instruction and Insight and First Place in Psychology, Chanticleer International Book Awards

One of the autism community’s most beloved classics, Ten Things Every Child with Autism Wishes You Knew has informed, delighted, and guided millions of families and professionals the world over since its first edition was published in 2005.

A child’s voice leads into each chapter, offering a one-of-a-kind exploration into how ten core characteristics of autism affect our children’s perceptions and reactions to the surrounding physical, sensory and social environments. This revised and updated third edition sharpens the focus on these basic aspects while expanding on how our own perspectives shape the life of our child and ourselves, today, tomorrow, and for years to come. An all-new section illuminates the surprising breadth of our power of choice and outlines potent strategies for strong decision-making in every situation.

Every parent, teacher, social worker, therapist, and physician should have this succinct and informative book in their back pocket. Framed with both humor and compassion, the book lists the top ten characteristics that help illuminate—not define—children with autism. Ellen's personal experiences as a parent, an autism columnist, and a contributor to numerous parenting magazines coalesce to create this guide for anyone with someone on the autism spectrum in their life.

I believe this is a very good resource for those who might have, or have need to work with children who might or do have autism to any extent. It is a real eye-opener.

Great resource for understanding children with autism

There was nothing ground breaking in this book but I loved it. A lot of really good reminders for me, and for anyone new to the autism journey, it will be INCREDIBLY helpful! It’s also just nice to hear from a mom who has been through it and come out the other side.

Great introduction

This is a very informative resource for every parent of an autistic child. Helpful examples, insights, and how tto prepare for the “relay” of raiding an autistic child.

Must Read

This book will change your outlook on autism in a positive way! It really gives you a perspective from the child’s point of view.

Very insightful

The book has many interesting and valid points about parenting or educating children with autism. But the narration is terrible. The equalization is wrong, and the result was that the narration often hurt my ears. And the narrator’s inflection and phrasing was often odd, making it hard to listen and follow where she was in a thought or paragraph. But the most annoying thing by far was the whiny, infantile voice she used when narrating thoughts or words attributed to an autistic child.

I would likely read more books by this author, but I would not listen to more books narrated by this narrator.

Interesting and helpful, but badly narrated

Our grandson was recently diagnosed with Autism. The breadth of resources, therapies, and perspectives is bewildering. 10 Things your Autistic Child… helped bring a sense of direction and hope for the road we were preparing to walk.
