About this listen

"In here," he said, pushing on the skin above my heart, "you're 10 below zero. And you're closer to death than I am." My name is Parker. My body is marked with scars from an attack I don't remember. I don't want to remember. I choose to live my life by observation, not through experience. While people are laughing and kissing and connecting, I'm in the corner. Watching them live. I'm indifferent to everything, everyone. The only emotion I feel with any kind of depth is annoyance, and I feel it often. A text message sent to the wrong number proves to be my undoing. His name is Everett, but I call him rude. He's pushy, he's arrogant, he crowds my personal space, and worst of all: he makes me feel. He chooses to wear all black, all the time, as if he's waiting to attend a funeral. Probably because he is. Everett is dying. And he's spending his final days living, truly living. In doing so, he's forcing me to feel, to heal. To come face to face with the demons I suppressed in my memory. He hurts me, he fulfills me, he completes me. And still, he's dying.

WARNING: This is not a story about two happy people who fall easily into love. This is a story about two broken people who find one another - and don't necessarily like each other. These characters are blunt, rude, and at times annoying. They are broken and sheltered and vulnerable.

Love the story but the narration..

As others said I almost gave up this narrator is not pleasant to listen to... however if you get past that the story will get you in the feels.

Oh wow

It's been a long time since I've read a book that led to oozing liquid of vulnerability from my person. I'm often considered cold and unfeeling. There was a time I was as passionate as a thousand fiery suns. the emotional ride.i took through these pages were only made more angsty by listening to the vulnerability of the narrator. I switched in hopes of a less tangible response to the written word. I felt every word ripped from his journal and whisper of breath across her skin. Now I need a a tattoo to remind me that I have lived in Kelvin as well as -10°F.

A heart touching plot

It's been refreshing reading such an emotionally deep set of characters. I enjoy this book more than I thought I would. It's quite the ride. I am now a fan of Whitney Barbetti!

The suspense and emotions

Finished it within 24 hours! Just wanted to know what would happen next. Natasha Soudek, the narrator, did a really good job making me feel the emotions in the characters! 🫶🏼

I. AM. WRECKED.

I read about 400 books per year, and I have NEVER in my life been so shaken by a single book. This was my first experience with this author so I only had previous reviews to go off of, and the things people said made me assume it’d be emotional but probably just like a lot of the other “gut wrenching” and “angsty” romance novels I read regularly.

No. Just, no.

This story made me have to stop driving and turn off audible because I was hyperventilating crying and could not get a grip. I have never, NEVER, been so terrified of finishing a book. I knew if I was feeling this way with more than an hour left, that I’d probably throw up from crying if I went any further.

Yes, I finished it.
Yes, I’m glad I finished it.
Yes, I will listen to this again, probably in a year or so because I obviously need some serious recovery time.
And, yes, YOU should listen to this story as well.

Seriously. GAH. This author tried to make my heart stop. Still dealing with aftershocks of emotional distress from this book.

Side note: Listen to this at 1.2 speed because the narrator is really good but SOOOOO SLOWWWW. 1.2 is the equivalent of normal tempo.
