Inspiration for the Netflix Limited Series, Tales of the City

The sixth novel in the beloved Tales of the City series, Armistead Maupin’s best-selling San Francisco saga.

A fiercely ambitious TV talk show host finds she must choose between national stardom in New York and a husband and child in San Francisco. Caught in the middle is their longtime friend, a gay man whose own future is even more uncertain.

Wistful and compassionate yet subversively funny, Sure of You is the pitch-perfect sixth novel in Armistead Maupin’s legendary Tales of the City series.

Well this is the last one of the original 6 in the series. Should be interesting how they change some of what’s all ready happened in the new series coming out on Netflix next week

Fabulous series

I love these characters and I enjoyed the first five audiobooks immensely. Frances McDormand and Cynthia Nixon and Alan Cumming delivered stellar performances in books one through five. But in this final book, Eric McCormack missed the mark in many ways. He doesn’t seem to understand the ethereal, Zen mellow of Anna and he adopts an annoyingly sissy lispy voice for Thack. I found his performance so grating that I considered returning the audiobook after two or three short chapters.

Not So Sure … Imperfect End of a Terrific 6-Book Series

I really enjoyed this book. I think it is one of the best in the series. I do not agree with the reviewer who called the narration "the worst ever". On the contrary, I also find the narrator Eric McCormack to be excellent. His narration is lively, engaging and pleasant to listen to. Highly recommended.

One of the best books in the series

Out of the original six, I was looking forward to the narration by Eric McCormack the most. Though, for me, there will not be any comparison to Armistead’s dulcet tones, Eric has been the best of celeb narrators from the original six books. If only, Armistead would record unabridged versions of the original six and the last two…

Another great one…‼️

As always, Maupin entertains with a great story. The narration is wonderful as well. thank you.

a classic series

Sure of You was meant to be the ending of Tales of the Cities series. Thankfully Maupin revisited the characters 20 years later, adding 3 more volumes to the bring a proper conclusion to the tales.

Mary Ann has become everything she initially despised upon fleeing Ohio. She abandons both her husband and child for fame and fortune. Brian has become weak and easily dominated by Mary Ann. Michael, yes his same steady self, having found new love. Mona is around for only a brief cameo. Sadly, Mrs. Madrigal is given very little to do, and is absent for most of the story.

My biggest issue with this recording is Eric McCormack. He is a serviceable narrator, but nowhere near as good as Cynthia Nixon had been in previous installments. It felt as if I was listening to Will read a book to Jack.

My actual rating for this is 3.5. The book is well written and engaging but nowhere near as fun as previous installments.

An Unsatisfactory Conclusion

Hmm. This isn’t my first experience with this story, and imo, McCormick doesn’t seem to get these characters in the way I’ve always heard them. I wish Frances McDormand or Cynthia Nixon did this one as well as the majority of the others, but it’s not totally awful. I recommend listening to it on .08 or .09… he will sound slightly drunk sometimes, but at least he doesn’t sound like he’s on speed.

Motormouth who doesn’t get the characters. 2.5 stars.

I love these books, and these characters, dearly. And I have to admit that this is why I soldiered through this one. Be warned: this is not a happy, feel-good book. It is dominated by hurt and anger. It is an emotionally difficult read. The characters seem weary and bitter, even jaded. You will ache on their behalf, throughout.

I have to say that McCormack is the best narrator yet. He glades between characters easily and helps craft the story with his vocal talents. A perfect choice!

Total heartache

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Eric McCormack?

Absolutely anyone. His performance was hands down the worst I have ever heard. He doesn't connect with any of the characters and some of his interpretations are border line offensive and always full on annoying. It was nails on a chalk board but since it's book 6 I had to finish it. I was literally wincing in parts, especially his Prue Giroux!!! Unbelievably horrible.

worst narrator ever!!!
