About this listen

Long-listed, Library Journal Best Books of the Year, 2023

"With his enthusiasm for spoken-word poetry, improv, and nonbinary politics, up-and-coming voice talent André Santana brings a personable feel to this satirical sci-fi romp...This audiobook is a fast-paced cocktail of social commentary, humor, and horror."—AudioFile

Straight, two-time Hugo Award nominee Chuck Tingle’s first horror novella, is now in audio!

When a strange tear in the cosmos appears within Earth’s annual path, the consequences are disastrous. For one night a year, the vast majority of humans now undergo a frightening mental change, transforming into hateful, rage-fueled zombies who will stop at nothing to satiate their desire for brutality.

While not much is understood about this horrific mass hysteria, the demographic it effects is very specific: cisgender straight people.

A few years after the first of these tragic events, four friends from across the queer spectrum look for safety in solitude, hunkering down in a remote desert cabin for what is now known as Saturation Day. With a vaccine available for straight people to curb their violent episodes, some predict the worst is over. Others aren’t so sure.

As night falls, it becomes clear that survival isn’t guaranteed this Saturation Day.

Loved this

I had my popcorn out throughout this entire read. Queer horror! Every year the straights go insane! Murder! Chaos! Joshua Tree and Palm Springs desert vibes!

My first read from Tingle, I love his book titles and now can say I also like his book content too. André Santana did a great job narrating as well!

Solid Queer Horror

Chuck Tingle tackles a lot of heavy topics in the queer community. If you consider yourself a Straight ally you need to read this book and consider who YOU truly would be in this universe. Chuck build a fascinating world, with compelling characters. There are going to be times reading this book that will boil your blood, and it wants you remember that. Highly recommend to anyone who just finish Camp Damascus.

a WILD ride

WOW! This is so different from anything else I've read from Chuck Tingle, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I'm pleasantly surprised!

The narration from André Santana was amazing. I was on the edge of my seat with bated breath.

Incredible, moving, and suspenseful

Possibly my favorite horror work I've ever listened to! Chuck Tingle does a very good job getting at the fears we hold under the surface as queers and bringing them to the surface.

Satire master

Chuck Tingle is a master, and this might be his best yet! Instead of spoofing erotica tropes for social commentary, he turns to the horror genre to great effect. Must-read!

This story says volumes

Nothing is perfect, but this story shines. The allegories in the piece are rich and insightful making this much more than the sum of its parts. Narration was spot on, pulling you in. Looking forward to more horror from Chuck Tingle.

the only title by chuck tingle ive ever not enjoyed

I loved camp Damascus but this one just didn't do it for me. the setting was very interesting but none of the characters were likable. **spoilers** there's one day a year where they need to hide and not a single one in the group is prepared? and then they act irresponsibly because they "don't want to live in fear". maybe it's too soon after the pandemic but it made more sense that people wouldn't want to live in fear and go back out in the world because it's here to stay, but in the book it's one freaking day a year. and the main character in particular has already experienced the horror on a personal level, yet learned nothing. They forgot gas and groceries?! they stop at a bar, drive a drone around, and then get in the hottub while most of the world population wants to kill them?!? if the characters don't care about there own safety, it makes the reader less invested in their safety too. I am still looking forward to bury your guys, despite my dislike for this book though.
