HUGO AWARD WINNER: BEST NOVELLA
WINNER OF THE NEBULA AND LOCUS AWARDS: BEST NOVELLA

“[An] exquisitely crafted tale...Part epistolary romance, part mind-blowing science fiction adventure, this dazzling story unfolds bit by bit, revealing layers of meaning as it plays with cause and effect, wildly imaginative technologies, and increasingly intricate wordplay...This short novel warrants multiple readings to fully unlock its complexities.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

From award-winning authors Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone comes an enthralling, romantic novel spanning time and space about two time-traveling rivals who fall in love and must change the past to ensure their future.

Among the ashes of a dying world, an agent of the Commandment finds a letter. It reads: Burn before reading.

Thus begins an unlikely correspondence between two rival agents hellbent on securing the best possible future for their warring factions. Now, what began as a taunt, a battlefield boast, becomes something more. Something epic. Something romantic. Something that could change the past and the future.

Except the discovery of their bond would mean the death of each of them. There’s still a war going on, after all. And someone has to win. That’s how war works, right?

Cowritten by two beloved and award-winning sci-fi writers, This Is How You Lose the Time War is an epic love story spanning time and space.

Bigolas sent me

I went into this knowing nothing but it's amazing! Red and Blue are people who can see threads in time. They can manipulate them and are recruited into rival agencies to fight a war in time.

Each pebble moved leaves a trace that they eventually notice and start leaving little "haha. You lose" notes for each other.

Great narrator. Great story. Great Twitter family

A beautiful love story

A beautiful love story played out on a grand scale. This is a story of love triumphant, just not in the way one might expect.

Curse you, Bigolas, I loved, and loved it to bits.

I was mesmerized from the start to the finish. Great work by the narrators, they match their characters incredibly.

Thanks Bigolas Dickus Wolfwood

An amazing read/listen, glad a random tweet put me onto it. Don’t look up anything as details could spoil the fun. Just get into it.

Hard to start, but worth it

Stay the course if you have trouble with all the imagery at the beginning. It builds a universe to bounce around in.
This book will grab you and make you care.

Compelling, inventive story; well-performed

Such an inventive, compelling, and achingly beautiful story. The characters are so fascinating, and it's very well-performed.

Excelent short and twisted

I'm not normally into time travel stories but this one was handled elegantly. You do need to pay close attention though as the language and references and metaphors can get difficult to follow.

Predictable

This novella is good, but nothing to write home about. And I don’t like the cover which is one reason I have not listened to it until now.

As for the writing and plot, It’s a pretentious story. It’s about two females, both and/or one at least is genetically modified with cybernetic implants. If you know anything about science and technology and people in general, having tech in us is just as preposterous as how Victorians imagined the future and technology.

The letters they write to one another read like the shipping news:

“What is the value of pi to sixty-two decimals?”

“If train A leaves Toronto at six p.m. travelling east at one hundred kilometers an hour, and train B leaves
Ottawa at seven p.m. travelling west at one hundred twenty kilometers per hour, when will they cross?”

What can I say? My first thought was trying to be ‘too clever,’ which made it predictable and also kept me at an arm’s length from really caring about the characters or what happened to them.

Overall, the novella was fine. I would recommend it if someone doesn’t mind poetry and doesn’t read a lot of romance because not only was the book trying too hard to convince you the authors were brilliant, but the romance fell flat because these are not romance writers. The narration was well done.
