About this listen

When history teacher Fritz Russell walks through his classroom door, he finds himself in the company of General Robert E. Lee, over 150 years in the past. Fritz finds his sudden time trip to the past both a gift and a chance for great adventure. But when a portal opens to the Oval Office, he realizes that the mysterious gate could also be put to a more serious purpose.

When the president hires him to help with national security, Fritz doesn't believe there is any danger in traveling across time and space. But will his own government consider him expendable if he cannot solve the mystery of the portal?

Good story

While I liked the story itself I wasn't fond of the narrator. The narration was a bit bland for my taste.

Picks up in the second half

A slow burn to a faster moving second half the the story and world building for the sequels and introduction to some fun characters. The narration and editing were choppy at times with sentences being repeated here and there. Occasionally it was difficult to tell which character was speaking from time to time as several characters sounded similar but will get book 2 with a credit in the near future

Tough one to review

This is really a hard book to review. Half way through the book, I would have said it is horrible and don't get it. But by the end of the book, I find myself wanting to know more about the story. And really, that is what you want in a book .
The narrator is just horrendous. If they would have had Ray Porter, Wil Wheaton, Mark Boyett, or maybe Chrisitian Rummel, it would have elevated this book drastically. Eric Halvorson would be just fine in a book that did not need voices for other characters. But he is just awful at doing other voices. He needs to stick to mafia genre, or how to books.
The book did fail in a big was in that I expected so much more. I love time travel books. 11.22.63 and A Gift Of Time were very good, for instance. But they dropped the ball. Honestly it feels more like a YA genre book with a history lesson in it.
