Anyone who wants to write a musical should listen to this and every interview with Stephen Sondheim. Everything he does in his writing process is so well thought out and is explained so simply and beautifully. He is as good of a teacher as he is a composer and lyricist. Listening to him talk about his inspirations and method is so fascinating. He really cares about the shows, and the music, and the characters and it shows in all the incredible detail he has put into making them. Less is more, God is in the details, and content dictates form!

Genius and Inspiring

When I first got this book I wasn’t sure about the contents or if I would like or dislike. The book is quite revealing explains a lot of the house Steven sound time wrote his shows and what formed his writing of them. If you are a fan of Stephen sometimes shows they will provide a lot of insight as to how and why they were written. It is sad that we will no longer see any new shows from him. Shows I loved initially that we’re not ahead have now become a huge hit and it makes sense to me as to why. Short but to the point and provides a lot of material.

Insight into one of the greats!
