Worth the wait!

From the second the book came out I’ve been checking and checking and checking and checking for the audio version. I finally gave up. And then, all of a sudden, here it is. Worth the wait and the time. What a fantastic broad was Mary Rodgers Guettel. Drink it in.

If you can sing along with original cast albums from the Golden Age of Broadway, then this book is for you. Christine Baranski makes Mary Rodgers' wit, wisdom, and wisecracks come alive, and she perfects a snarky tone that is more delectable than depressing.

Great Listen-To!

Christine Baranski does a great job of making Mary Rodgers come to life. Jesse Green did a wonderful job of interjecting explanations as needed, and at the end, I could have cried, as I felt I lost someone I had known. Very well done!

What a fun book!

Mary Rodgers had such a non-traditional life, and it was told so well through Jesse Green and Christine Baranski’s narration. I felt like Rodgers was telling me the story, while Green’s “back to the real world” side notes punctuated the storytelling. I want more.

Amazing Life

I LOVED THIS BOOK AND THE READING OF IT. I didn’t know anything about Mary Rodgers other that who her father was. I was many times astounded and enlightened with her accomplishments and her relationships. What an awesome human being! And Christine Baranski was pitch perfect, as was the voice of reason and truth, Jesse Green. Thanks so much for this book and Audible.

Candor and humor

I loved it and so will you. A look behind the curtain at Broadway, the the Rodgers family and all the ups and downs of trying to be creative.

Best of all: the narrator was superb. It made the listener believe Mary Rodgers personally narrated the book.

Not Since Auntie Mame and Oscar Wilde

Bursting with the dry urbane wit of Fraiser, Auntie Mame, the comedic works of Joe Keenan and Oscar Wilde arrives one Mrs. Mary Rodgers Guettel as exquisitely interpreted by Christine Baranski and Jesse Green. This book is a nonstop delight of wordplay and delicious anecdotes. Honest to a fault but humble too, this biography/memoir is a triumph. And truly a necessary one to complete the picture of Broadway’s Golden Age. Buy this.

Gobsmacked

This memoir is right up there with Frank Rich’s GHOST LIGHT in terms of favorites right now, and I’m so glad I experienced it first in audio form with the perfect Christine Baranski standing in for Mary Rodgers. Baranski’s delivery drips of witty urbanity, just like the text—and Jesse Green’s footnotes are perfectly on point throughout.

The text itself is at once hilarious and deeply moving. This is highly recommended for anyone who has struggled in their relationships with difficult parents or anyone interested in theatre. It is magnificent.

Witty and wonderful.

While she would be the first to tell you that her talent as a composer, paled and comparison to either her father or one of her very best friends, Stephen Sondheim, Mary Rogers is a trailblazer from an era when women did not compose Broadway musicals. But she did. More importantly, she is a hilarious storyteller and wonderful writer, and best of all, gives absolutely zero f**ks. This is well worth spending quite a few hours with.
