Publisher's summary

He was a child without a past, a Corellian street urchin, abandoned, foraging for scraps of food, when the cruel Garris Shrike whisked him away to join a nomadic band of space-faring criminals. Now, years later, chafing under Shrike's sadistic tyranny, driven by dreams of adventure and glory, Han fights his way free. His goal: to become an Imperial Navy pilot. But first he needs hands-on experience flying spacecraft, and for that he takes a job on the planet Ylesia - a steaming world of religious fanaticism and alluring sensuality, where dreams are destroyed and escape is impossible.

Critic reviews

"Crispin deftly weaves Han's early years into the Star Wars storyline and provides details that shape his personality. This prequel belongs in Star Wars collections." (Library Journal)
"This story...features a single narrator who mimics Harrison Ford as if he were younger, playing a young Han Solo with eerie authenticity. Sound effects and John Williams's stunning Star Wars music are used throughout to meticulous effect." (AudioFile)

As fun as I remember it!

I read this trilogy as it was first released and enjoyed it a ton. Listening to this brought back the memories of how much I enjoyed it then. What several reviewers don’t seem to be aware of is that when these audio books were first recorded and released (on cassette!) every book was about 3 hours long. If there was money in recording an unabridged version today they would do it. Be glad you have what you have.

The other thing some reviewers can’t seem to understand is that this book, along with many other Star Wars books, was recorded BEFORE The Phantom Menace taught us the correct pronunciation of Courascant. Everyone ended the word with the “can’t “ sound. Complaining about the pronunciation seems petty when they, like me and everyone else, said it that way.

The story is a great telling of Solo’s early adventures and what turned him into the lovable rogue he became. Largely, I enjoyed Crispins trilogy more than the Solo movie- which I also liked a lot. Two versions of the story? Heck yeah! I love it! These will get more play from me!

Great story, strange narrator

The original EU story of Han Solo is perfect. Something was weird about the narrator though. He read everything so fast, like it was race to get each chapter done. Also he didn't really seem to grasp the characters...making Han sound childish and whiny...almost like Anakin. And the run time was so short, like maybe the story was shortened for Audiobooks.

The story itself is awesome though. A.C. Crispin wrote a great trilogy that does our favorite smuggler justice!

And it begins.

In this book you get to find out where Han came from as a child and early life. What guided him into the life of a pilot, and into joining the imperial army.

Pronunciation

It would be nice if the narrator would do some homework and educate himself on the pronunciation of words from the book as well as from the movies

First Star Wars book

The story was well written. I never found my self lost or in another world with the reader. He knew how to keep my attention. I would recommend this to any of my Star Wars friends

Fantastic intro to a legendary star wars character

What a great performance! I read this book while still in primary school and this is the first time I have revisited it in years. David Pittu is an excellent narrator and I me thoroughly enjoying this nostalgic read. He had excellent command of the content, the flow of the story and the iconic sound effects had me grinning from ear to ear.

I was puzzled about the comments regarding pronunciation, until the end of the last chapter when he pronounced the silent 2nd "C" Coruscant. I cringed, but it wasn't a deal breaker for me.

I never found the rest of the trilogy, and can't wait to start the next book in the installment!
