About this listen

The Spellweaver: a legendary sorcerer who crafted magic with their words.

These spells were written down and given to others who would become mages. Over time, the Spellweaver was no longer reincarnated through the ages.

Without the magic-creating words of the Spellweaver, magic is now a finite resource. Soon, magic will be lost to the sands of time. Unless a new Spellweaver can be found.

Calwyn Weft lives in the village of Pebbert and works as an apothecary’s apprentice. It’s the one job he knows how to do well. But when the village is visited by a strange, red-robed figure, Cal learns that there’s more to him than brewing potions.

In little more than a day, Cal discovers that he’s not only a codex-carrying mage, but he’s the reincarnation of the Spellweaver, a being who can craft spells.

With a new purpose, he sets off into Yaetis to collect spells and magic, all while learning what it means to be the reincarnated Spellweaver.

Except there are forces who would seek to use Cal for their dark purposes, ones who would twist his incredible potential to their own ends.

A Good Start

My first introduction to DB King and I've come away impressed. The framework of the story is familiar what with a young protagonist coming into his magical awareness and making a harrowing journey to an academy to learn more about their magical skills. Although somewhat formulaic, there are a number of differences to the story to make it a worthy listen. Although the characters backstories are somewhat abbreviated, there is enough to pique one's interest. The pacing moves steadily forward and the world building is written well. The exposition is kept to a minimum which is often a series bane when overdone.

The one problem with the book is that the MC comes across as overly naive and his companion a bit too flippant, at times but not too unexpected during the first book of a series.

Tim Gerard Reynolds' performance is solid, as would be expected.

I look forward to Book 2 of the series.

Good storyline

Not a bad story, felt rushed at the end. Still want to get the next book.

underwhelming

Mix and match your favorite coming of age magic hero fantasy with a bit of avatar and you already have this book. One character was enjoyable, but they were all flat.

not impressed

the start seems good, it just didn't continue that way. the concept is interesting but not well executed. I know there's a book 2, but I won't be following, it it just didn't pull me in like it probably should have. I can think of quite a few different parts that just could have been written differently. It would have pulled me in and keep me focused and this just didn't do it for me.

Raya

Raya was just too annoying for me to continue this book. I liked Cal but I could've done without Raya
