Publisher's summary

Sometimes funny, sometimes harrowing, always moving, Somewhere in the Music, I’ll Find Me is a coming-of-age memoir that illustrates the power of a dream to shape a lifetime, no matter what fate has in store.

When Laurie Markvart's brother took her to the big city to experience her first rock concert, Laurie's life was forever changed. The stage, the lights, the heart-pounding sound—then and there, teenage Laurie knew she was made for music. But could she make it with music? Her Wisconsin farm town barely had one stoplight, much less a spotlight big enough to shine on her larger-than-life dreams.

From the '80s rock bars of Minneapolis to the bustling music scene of Austin and New York City's Broadway in the '90s, Laurie's determination to follow her dreams led her down dark alleys and again into the spotlight. Through it all, her parent's hopes and fears shaped her path, guiding her home more than once. But the meaning of home changes as the years go by. When a series of losses shakes the foundation of Laurie's life, she returns to the music—where she's always found solace—perhaps now she's ready to find herself there, too.

A gripping memoir where the author brings you along on her journey. Whether it’s an emotional or entertaining chapter, she makes you feel like you are there in the moment experiencing it with her. From humble beginnings to the excitement of a national audition, Laurie peels away the layers of the onion to expose raw and honest truths. The book is a testament to her love of life, music, and her mother. Highly recommend!

My Friend Laurie's Amazing Journey: Thoughts on Her Memoir

Reading "Somewhere in the Music, I'll Find Me" by Laurie Markvart was a deeply moving experience for me. As a longtime friend of Laurie, I’ve had the privilege of knowing her throughout many chapters of her life. I had the great privilege of meeting and spending time with her father many years ago. He was a kind and strong man who left an indelible mark on her life, and Laurie captures his essence in such great detail in the book. Her journey from those humble beginnings in Waterloo to the vibrant music scenes of Minneapolis, Austin, and New York City has always been an inspiring story, but reading her memoir brought new depth and understanding to her experiences.

Laurie’s memoir is a candid and heartfelt journey that delves into her personal growth and challenges, weaving through moments of anticipation and levity. It documents her quest for self-acceptance and healing in the face of deep sorrow and adversity.

Throughout the book, Laurie’s voice remains genuine and relatable. She writes with a raw honesty that makes you feel her pain, her joy, and her resilience. Her memoir is not just about her life in music; it’s about the human spirit’s incredible capacity to endure and find hope even in the darkest times.

Laurie’s story is a testament to the power of music and the strength of the human spirit. It’s a journey of self-discovery and healing that resonates deeply, especially for those of us who have known and loved her for so long. Reading her memoir has reminded me of the remarkable person Laurie is and the incredible journey she’s been on. I highly recommend "Somewhere in the Music, I'll Find Me" to anyone looking for an inspiring and heartfelt read.

Heartfelt, funny and inspiring memoir

After listening to Laurie Markvart’s memoir, I feel like I know her. In the book she details her dream of becoming a singer, her close relationship with her parents, her mother’s struggle with mental illness, her time touring in a band, her adventures in New York, becoming a wife and mother, and ultimately how the music carried her through all the phases of her life. At times she finds success, while other times she faces rejection, but her passion for the music and what it does to her soul is the real prize to her life. It’s a heartfelt, funny, and inspiring memoir. (And listening to it on Audible is extra special because it includes some of her music… and she has a great reading voice!!)
