About this listen

A modern master of suspense, critically acclaimed author Charlie Donlea returns with a taut, gripping novel about the deadly secrets hiding in plain sight....

The truth is easy to miss, even when it's right in front of us. As a forensic reconstructionist, Rory Moore sheds light on cold-case homicides by piecing together crime-scene details others fail to see. Cleaning out her late father's law office a week after his burial, she receives a call that plunges her into a decades-old case come to life once more.

In the summer of 1979, five Chicago women went missing. The predator, nicknamed the Thief, left no bodies and no clues behind - until police received a package from a mysterious woman named Angela Mitchell, whose unorthodox investigation skills appear to have led to his identity. But before they could question her, Angela disappeared.

Forty years later, the Thief is about to be paroled for Angela's murder - the only crime the DA could pin on him. But the cryptic file Rory finds in her father's law office suggests there is more to the case, and Angela Mitchell, than what was fed to the public, the details of which have been buried for four decades.

Rory's talents are tested as she begins reconstructing Angela's last days. Making one startling discovery after another, Rory becomes helplessly entangled in the enigma of Angela Mitchell and what happened to her. Drawing connections between the past and present, Rory uncovers dark truths about the reclusive victim, her father, and the man called the Thief that send her down a twisting trail where things may not be as they appear.

As she continues to dig, even Rory can't be prepared for the full, terrifying truth that is emerging....

Editor's Pick

Nothing will get in her way
"Rory Moore, compelled by her sense of justice, is swept into a grizzly, cold case murder file left behind by her late father. There are no leads and little evidence, though police at the time believed the crime was committed by a predator knick-named “the Thief.” *DUN, DUN, DUN* Narrated by Nina Alvamar, Some Choose Darkness is an unparalleled audio-adventure that takes listeners down the rabbit hole of a terrible case about five women who went missing during the summer of 1979 in Chicago. As I listened and followed along, hidden truths were uncovered and I could feel myself developing a sense of dread. Like Rory, listeners are immersed in the life and last days of one of the victims, only to come up with more questions than answers. Some Choose Darkness is un-put-downable until the very end."—Nicole R., Audible Editor

Almost Really Good

I found the story and characters interesting and the suspense was good. But could authors please stop spending the first half of their books talking about how petite/slender/physically frail the heroine is, then have her launch herself into danger and/or go up against a male psychopath without telling anyone where she’s going? Why do women have to be irrational and downright dumb? It’s insulting! It’s why I don’t read Robert Dugoni’s Tracy Crosswhite books. Do better!

Predictable but Good, DoNot Miss This Catalog Plus

Boy 3 of this author’s books on now on Catalog Plus. It’s a shame that more members felt the daily deal of Those Empty Eyes did not compel them to spend their credits on author’s earlier books!!! I did per Shelly and Waynes reviews. I was not disappointed, but as Wayne stated on his review, Those Empty Eyes was this authors best work yet. So I will await his next book, following, so I do not miss it.
See Shelly review on this book. I loved Those Empty Eyes as it had a shocking ending and that is pretty hard to get on every single book! I went looking for it anyway, and was entertained by this author.

Surprisingly Good

I normally don’t like thrillers and psychological crime books. I was prepared to turn it off at any time but was soon hooked. A plot with unexpected twists and turns and unusual characters. Hope you enjoy. I did.

Solid story

Some Choose Darkness is a great listen! We are waiting (hoping) for the sequel. The characters are well developed and the twists were just enough, and appropriate. I definitely recommend this one.

Draws you in

Well crafted story. The way it was told, jumping between past and present made for mystery and suspense. Didn't think the end was great but served the purpose. Narration was very good.

great mystery!

I enjoyed this book, and was captured from the beginning. There were definitely twists and surprises. I usually feel like I can guess what's coming in many books - here, I had some ideas, but still wasn't sure almost until the reveal. I'm glad the author made certain choices near the end, although he left one unanswered piece.
The narrator was very good. I found her voice pleasant and engaging. I felt like she was the main character. Her male voices weren't perfect, but that didn't interfere with my enjoyment. I would seek out books read by her again.

Good enough

Decent mystery story although figured it out well before the end. More if a story than a who donit.

Ignore the haters

Thriller/Mystery books come in all shapes & sizes. With each, you have to keep an open mind. I read the authors Summit Lake & The Girl Who Was Taken, loved both. Thought, let's see how a 3rd book from this author will be.. absolutely DEVOURED it. Each book is unique to itself which is tough to find in authors.

Loved the characters personality, because people are different and unique in their own ways. The main character was just that and I loved it. The story had depth and kept you guessing, what more could you want?

The narrator was superb too. Not over the top and not monotone.
