About this listen

Penguin presents the unabridged downloadable audiobook edition of Soldier Spy by Tom Marcus, read by Jason Langley.

In the boot were six homemade pipe bombs, all linked to detonate at the same time from a single call on a brand-new pay-as-you-go phone found on the target.

Special Branch also found Chinese Type 56 assault rifles with eight full magazines of ammunition. His target was a local school. He planned to attack two coaches of teenagers returning home after a school trip to France. Approximately 60 children, their accompanying teachers and their waiting parents. He was going to kill them all.

'My world was dark, no colour, no right or wrong and no backup. People like me exist to fight those no one else dares face. I wasn't the last resort; I was the only option.'

Tom Marcus was recruited by MI5 in the wake of the 7/7 attacks on London. After five years spent undercover as part of a covert British Army special operations unit, he offered the Security Service the edge they so desperately needed. Following months of intensive training, Marcus was thrown into a world of relentless, unimaginable pressure, a never-ending struggle to prevent terrorist atrocities on our city streets, foil devastating strikes against the nation's infrastructure, and keep our country's secrets safe from foreign spies. Split-second decisions carried life or death consequences. And not all his colleagues would survive the fight.

In this explosive firsthand account, Soldier Spy lifts the lid on the war being waged by MI5 to keep us safe in our towns and cities for the first time - a blistering, visceral insight into life on the front line against terror, revealed in never-before-heard detail.

It was a job which would inevitably exact a heavy price. But when it came down to it, Marcus knew he didn't have a choice.

'Some people join the service out of a sense of duty, some out of wanting to do some good by removing the evil. I did it because it's all I knew. I'm a hunter of people, and I'm damn good at it.'

A view into a life that is both amazing and scary

The story is told in a series of linked events that seem random and individual at first but are eventually tied together in the culmination of a tale that, when one recalls this is a true story, is both oddly intimidating and absolutely reassuring. Tom is real life hero on the order of Hollywood's finest. It provides a perspective on world events, terror and law/security services that the general public not only needs to hear but should reflect and ruminate on for full mental effect.
I think it also gave me, perhaps unintentionally, a better understanding and compassion for PTSD victims. Overall the text is not necessarily remarkable on its own but the subtext certainly is. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who works behind the scenes to keep us safe. Your service is invaluable and appreciated. Thank you. and your families.

Excellent Audio on counter intelligence

I purchased this book as entertainment and learned it's well written and the commentary is great. It was exciting to hear and at times it kept me on edge.

Ideal for people seeking an understanding of working for MI5

This is a true story of a young man with a rough background who is recruited by MI5 after a turn in the army. A slightly built person he pushed himself to become the best he could be in all dimensions. This resulted in his ignoring the signs of PTSD..Unfortunately , he was distrustful of everyone except his immediate family. Reluctant to follow the recommended treatment he decides to treat himself his way. The fast paced quality of the story will appeal to many but I found the endless foul language both unnecessary and abrasive. But it is his life, not mine.

Strength through adversity

An outstandingly honest & intense recount of what it takes emotionally, to be a soldier, a spy, a family man & be ruthlessly good at it. Extremely well written, communicated & narrated. Excellent!

Excellent

What a story amdney opener. I thoroughly loved this book and can't wait to read more of Tom Marcus's work.

The story, aided by Jason Langkey's narration grips you from the very first sentamce right through to the last. I genuinely didn't want this book to end, I loved from cover to cover, and if you chose to purchase it, I hope you enjoy as much as I did.
