This positive guide provides a science-based program for promoting teens' independence by building their executive skills - the fundamental brain-based abilities needed to get organized, stay focused, and control impulses and emotions.
Executive skills experts Drs. Richard Guare and Peg Dawson are joined by Colin Guare, a young adult who has successfully faced these issues himself. Learn step-by-step strategies to help your teen live up to his or her potential now and in the future - while making your relationship stronger.

Many of us know we're putting too much pressure on our kids - and on ourselves - but how do we get off this crazy train? We want our children to succeed, to be their best, and to do their best, but what if they are not on board? A few years ago, Ned Johnson and Bill Stixrud started noticing the same problem from different angles: even high-performing kids were coming to them acutely stressed and lacking any real motivation. Many complained that they had no real control over their lives.

Understanding Girls with ADHD does not shy away from key areas of controversy. How, for example, can a family know whether it's ADHD or another set of problems that's the primary issue? How does one deal with the potential use of medication, which is plagued by bad press and abundant myths but which can, as part of a multi-faceted treatment plan, provide great benefit if the right dose is found and if the doctor works with the family to monitor positive effects and side effects carefully?

At the core of the Positive Discipline approach is understanding that teens still need their parents, just in different ways—and by better understanding who their teens really are, parents can learn to encourage both their teens and themselves, and instill good judgment without being judgmental.

All teens need help preparing for the adult world. For parents of an ADHD teen, additional navigation is essential. The average human brain isn’t fully developed until around the age of 25. That’s already seven years into adult life. When you consider the neuro differences between a typical brain and an ADHD brain, your teen may have greater developmental challenges.

The Organized Student contains hands-on strategies for teaching your disorganized child how to organize for success in middle school and high school, with special tips for kids with ADD/ADHD and learning disorders. The overstuffed backpack, the missing homework, the unused planner, the test he didn't know about. Sound familiar? When the disorganized child meets the departmentalized structure of middle school, everything can fall apart. Even the academically successful child will start to falter if she misses deadlines, loses textbooks, or can't get to class on time.

Worst reader
This book is important and helpful but the narrator was awful. Turned it off because her reading was too annoying to tolerate. Ruined this audiobook for me.

Vocal Growl
What made the experience of listening to Smart but Scattered Teens the most enjoyable?
The information was fantastic.
What didn’t you like about Abby Craden’s performance?
Her vocal growl is very irritating it shows a laziness in her presentation it is there in the text throughout and especially when she is reading quotes which might not have been so bad. But the consistancy of the growl was just bothersome. She is a fine reader if she could just loose the growl.
Any additional comments?
The information and PDFs for this book are tremendously helpful. I highly recommend this book for all parents who see their child starting to have trouble in Junior High.

A needed guide for Parents who deal with children with needs
It is an absolute must to have a printed book and a strongly recommend the Kindle App or device to follow a parent who has professional needs to listen to the book once and follow with the app. I plan to listen and do what is need a total of three times so that I may fully grasp and implement my assets and my deficits. It should be a must to have the audible app and kindle together for moderate to complex lifestyle changes that may forever change my parenting skill for the parent I have always wanted to be for me and my child. Contacting
I like the since behind it all. knowing about the development and why, but the teen under my roof is not my biological child. also as a Latina I do contact with much of the stories of the teen and parents. it's helpful in some ways but overall trying to get this teen to take a test or survey to find her learning methods is like pulling teeth.

Good source material for raising kids.
Our son has been given the term gifted after seeing a psychologist for over a year and his IQ is "north of 150" as she put it. But, as she also put it, "Gifted is not a gift".
While our son is a brilliant writer, actor, and person at the age of 13, he is also "scattered". Items forgotten at school, at home, what takes other kids 20 minutes may take our son 2 class periods. He is so brilliant to talk to that a fellow actor, who happens to be the husband of a local school principal and played our son's dad in "A Christmas Story", tried to "draft" our son to come to their school and was pretty agitated when we turned down the offer. He is so impressive, right up until it takes him all weekend to complete homework.
That is where this book comes in. Tips to help your child move faster, remember items, etc. The book covers a lot of issues, so not all will apply to your kid, but it was applicable enough to ours that I would recommend it.

Great content. Good mix pf research, with good examples and concrete tips.
The speaker is a bit slow and that can get annoying. I listened the whole book on 1.25x.
Other than that, awesome read!

I want to like it but....
I know this has good, useful information to me as a parent. However, maybe I am a bit scattered because I have had a hard time listening to this. I don't of it's the narration or the content, but it's kind of dry and boring.
I really want to finish this and get something from it, but it is so much easier to scroll to the next thing.
