About this listen
A woman watches her marriage implode over text message and decides that ignorance is not bliss in this bitterly satisfying short mystery by the New York Times bestselling author of Lady in the Lake.
Liz Kelsey promised herself she’d never again spy on her feckless husband, Phil. But then she discovers a string of suggestive texts on his secret burner phone. Even worse, he’s flirting with the woman who shook their unstable marriage once before. But knowledge is power. What’s more dangerous - what Liz knows or what Phil doesn’t know?
Laura Lippman’s Slow Burner is part of Hush, a collection of six stories, ranging from political mysteries to psychological thrillers, in which deception can be a matter of life and death. Each piece can be read or listened to in one truly chilling sitting.

Story
Blair Martin’s days rarely vary: she gets up, goes for a run, and then heads to work at a Manhattan literary agency where she nurtures authors through the publishing process. Her nights, spent alone in her too-large apartment, are similarly predictable. Then on an ordinary Wednesday, Blair enters her office building and spies a lost wallet. When Blair tracks down the owner, they arrange for a simple exchange. But the young woman, Maya, seems so vulnerable, much like Blair’s own daughter, Faith, who died tragically just last year, and Blair is unable to simply walk away.

Blending literature and memoir, Ann Patchett, author of State of Wonder and Bel Canto examines her deepest commitments: to writing, family, friends, dogs, books, and her husband in This Is the Story of a Happy Marriage. It's a report tempered by hard times. In "Matricide", Daum unflinchingly describes a parent's death and the uncomfortable emotions it provokes; and in "Diary of a Coma" she relates her own journey to the twilight of the mind. But Daum also operates in a comic register. With perfect precision, she reveals the absurdities of the marriage-industrial complex, of the New Age dating market, and of the peculiar habits of the young and digital.

Story
Beloved author Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction with a unique love story set in the New York City theater world during the 1940s. Told from the perspective of an older woman as she looks back on her youth with both pleasure and regret (but mostly pleasure), City of Girls explores themes of female sexuality and promiscuity, as well as the idiosyncrasies of true love. In 1940, nineteen-year-old Vivian Morris has just been kicked out of Vassar College, owing to her lackluster freshman-year performance.

Marriage in Greek Mythology
This was a short story about a married couple. Together for over twenty years, she is a teacher of Greek mythology and he is a money man. We learn that all is not well in the home, while she loves her husband, he is a control freak who chases other women. Most of the story is a background in the relationship, including several attempts at therapy. I'd have hit the divorce lawyer and kicked his ass to the curb with full alimony. She had other plans. I won't ruin the twist. It was rather interesting. Perfectly narrated on the audiobook by Amy McFadden. Lots of Greek mythology references.

Short but engrossing
This short story/novella was well written and the performance was excellent. I would have preferred that it had been a little longer with more character detail and action leading to the "twist." I figured out the ending a little early, but it was still an enjoyable listen.

Fantastic Short
At just under an hour this short story is included as an Amazon Prime or Kindle Unlimited membership benefit. These make great lunch break (or while folding laundry) listens.
This is my first experience with Laura Lippman and I’m definitely going to be adding more of her work to my TBR. This was a fantastic mystery with a splash of thriller. Liz seems so helpless to stop her husband from destroying their marriage with his emotional infidelity. Mostly Liz’s 3rd person POV, but with text exchanges between Phil & the slightly mysterious “HW”. Sometimes texting doesn’t translate well in audiobook form, but it worked great here. Though not at all what I was expecting, the ending was perfect.
I grabbed this because Amy McFadden. As always, she does a great job with a variety of voices and emotional inflections.
