About this listen

A compulsive debut thriller about motherhood, obsession, and how far we’d go to protect the ones we love

Five-year-old Ava Boone vanished without a trace six months ago. No witnesses, no sightings or arrests. But Grace Wright just moved in next door to the only suspect the case had: quiet, middle-aged Leland Ernest.

Recently divorced, Grace uprooted her two small children to start again and hopes the move will reset her crippling insomnia. With whispered neighborhood gossip and increasingly sleepless nights, Grace develops a fierce obsession with Leland and the safety of her children. Could she really be living next door to a child-kidnapper? A murderer?

With reality and dream blurring more each day, Grace desperately pursues the truth - following Ava’s family, demanding answers from the police - and then a body is discovered.

different

Freaky psychological story that keeps you guessing the whole time. Love this book! Different, raw and we really get into the mind of this truly flawed yet desperately trying woman.

Really enjoyed but…

The three year old Chloe’s vocabulary seemed way off - too mature for a three year old.

I’m delighted to have listened!

I read or listen to a book a day, and I find the wit of this author completely delightful. There is nothing cozy about this mystery but it stays just this side of gruesome as our often unreliable narrator ponders her perceptions and her illness in light of the savage killing of her neighbor.

Loved it

Loved this author’s perfectly detailed style of writing and the main character’s sarcasm and often morbid sense of humor. Touches on mental health, feeling alone and overwhelmed and drug abuse. There are curse words if you are traumatized by that. I am not so I enjoyed this book. Cliffhanger to the end!

Dark, Funny, and a Little Far-Fetched

I read a lot of suspense novels, particularly domestic suspense. As a result, I'm used to seeing the same plotline play out over and over again in book after book. But She Lies Close was different. It put a unique spin on the typical suspense or murder mystery and was full of dark humor which kept it flowing nicely. That said, some of it was a little far-fetched. While there were a few instances of this, the most distracting was the way the main character interacted with her love interest. She repeatedly acted like a hormonally-charged teenager and it just didn't feel authentic. It's a minor thing and didn't terribly detract from the story but it was a bit off-putting. As a woman, myself, I generally expect to be able to relate to the emotions of a female character and it was just a struggle with this one. Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable read and totally worth it for the unique story line.

Good book!

Early in the book I struggled a bit, but the further in the more the story held my attention and I couldn't wait to read on. Is she crazy, is she a murderer or is there another answer. Narrator was great!
