About this listen

From New York Times bestselling author Kathleen E. Woodiwiss comes one of her most iconic and beloved romances of all time....

A pact is sealed in secret behind the foreboding walls of Newgate Prison. In return for one night of unparalleled pleasure, a dashing condemned criminal consents to wed a beautiful heiress, thereby rescuing her from an impending and abhorred arranged union.

But in the fading echoes of hollow wedding vows, a solemn promise is broken, as a sensuous free spirit takes flight to a lush Caribbean paradise, abandoning the stranger she married to face the gallows unfulfilled.

Ruark Beauchamp’s destiny is now eternally intertwined with that of the tempestuous, intoxicating Shanna. He will be free...and he will find her. For no iron ever forged can imprison his resolute passion. And no hangman’s noose will keep Ruark from the bride—and ecstasy—that he craves.

What the....it's Beau-Chaump NOT Beechim!

l have loooved this story and its characters since Senior year in High School, nearly 40 years ago when a classmate handed me this book-knowing my avid love of reading ! This was the very first Romance l ever read and it caused me to fall hard for the Historical Romance genre and l have been hooked ever since! When l heard the narrator mispronounce the hero's name it took me back to when l was raving to my classmate about the wonderful story with it's rich fluid characters, l also mispronounced his name and her most livid response was, " What the....it's Beau-Chaump NOT (however l had butchered it)! Well, this was my reaction when l heard the narrator's awful take on this iconic KEW character!!! "What the....it's Beau-Chaump NOT Beechim!" It was so bad at a point she actually threw, not took but THREW me out of the story every time l heard Roo-ark or Beechim! The two together nearly made my provebial head explode! After about the twelfth hour (literally and figuratively) l resigned myself to it and became over taken once again with this elegantly wonderful tale about love and never giving up! It would be nice if the publisher would have the narrator FIX this horrid gaffe for crying out loud it's Beau-Chaump NOT Beechim! ;-)

This is probably 1 of my very favorite books by Ca

By Kathryn woodIwise I have a hard copy of it that I read over and over and over it's that good so to have it on audible it's great The only damn part The narrator cannot pronounce the heroine's names in it about drives me nuts other than that this is a fantastic book definitely worth the credits

Wonderful story..narration needs to be adjusted.

Needs Male narration for the men, The opinionated forward is totally unnecessary. The story is a Historical Romance Novel. One chooses to read this type of book, just as one chooses to read a novel depicting the atrocities of the Viking Wars or the Middle Ages.(no apologetic forwards there) There should be no apologies necessary for the view of the way things were several hundred years ago. I have loved this book since I first read it back in the 70's. KW is an excellent author for this type of genre. I have read all her other books. I just hope that the other books have different narration and that the forward is dismissed.

Narrator did an excellent job. Her pronunciation was spot on.

I don’t know why everyone is putting this narration down. This is a story taking place in England and the Colonies with English accents. Not French. I leaned the correct pronunciation of Beauchomp in Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series when it was explained on that TV series. And I’ll bet if you were in England and ask someone to pronounce Ruark they would pronounce it the way this narrator did. The pronunciation the negative reviewers want is the name Roark. That isn’t what KEW wrote. She wrote Ruark.
The real problem here ; THIS IS A WONDERFUL BOOK !!! Don’t make it where readers will not listen to it because of bad reviews. This is as good or better than all the top romance writers of the day. I’ll bet they all read it and it made an influence on the their writings.
Get this book it’s great! If you don’t, you’ll miss one of the best romance books of all times.

Great Book

This has been my favorite book since I first read it in 1981 or 82. I have been waiting a long, long time for the audible version and I am a little disappointed. The narrator was difficult to understand and the voices were terrible, especially Ruark and the other men. They all sounded alike. There should have been a male and a female narrating such a wonderful book. Something about her voice just ruined it for me. I hope she is not the narrator for the rest of the books.

Still one of the best!

I loved it just as I did all those many years ago! Ms.woodiwiss’ characters are so well described that they come alive in the story and one can’t help but becomes entangled in the drama as it unfolds. I believe it was even better this time around!

Shanna and Ruark...at last!

I own "Shanna" in hard copy, eBook, and now audio. Like many Kathleen Woodiwiss admirers, I've waited a long time for this production. Until getting married and starting my own family, I probably read Shanna at least once a year! I confess, the British pronunciation of "Ruark Beauchamp" took some getting used to. I would have also appreciated / preferred having male narrators voicing Ruark and other male roles, however, I was still able to appreciate this story and work that I have loved since 1977.

Romance and adventure

One of the most memorable books from Kathleen Woodiwiss. A page turner no doubt. Worth reading more than once.
