عقل وعاطفة الرواية التي أديت بالمسرح وعلى شاشة السينما مرات عديدة، وقد كتبت أوستن المسودة الأولى لهذه الرواية والتي كان اسمها "إلينور وماريان" في عام 1795، وقد كان عمرها آن ذاك 19 عام وكانت الرواية عبارة عن رسائل. وكانت أول رواية طويلة لأوستن، مع أنها كتبت العديد من القصص القصيرة في مراهقتها. وتدور أحداث القصة حول الاختلاف بين عقل إلينور ومشاعر ماريان؛ والتي اعتمدت الكاتبة على المفارقة بين شخصيتها وشخصية شقيقتها الكبرى كاساندرا لرسم الشخصيات. حيث كانت كاساندرا الأخت العاقلة، بينما كانت أوستن العاطفية.
وتدور أحداثها حول إلينور وماريان ابنتي السيد داشوود من زوجته الثانية. عندما توفى الأب، انتقلت أملاك العائلة إلى جون،حيث كان على الشقيقات الانتقال إلى ديفون مع أمهن الأرملة، تحزن الشقيقات لترك بيت العائلة الذي يملكه الآن أخوهن الثري نصف الشقيق. حيث بقيت نساء عائلة داشوود في حالة يرثى لها، فقد أصبحن فتيات فقيرات تماماً.
وتروي القصة حياة هؤلاء الفتيات في بيتهن الجديد في كوخ بعيد. حيث يعشن الحسرة والرومانسية، ويصبح لديهم معجبين عديدين، منهم الشاب دوارد فيرارس الخجول، والسيد ويلوبي الرومانسي والوسيم، وعقيد براندون الحزين الصامت، لكن مسار الحب الحقيقي لا يجري بسلاسة في البداية، فتختفي آمال الزواج، وتكشف أسرار، وتنفطر قلوب وتنتهى المفارقة الموجودة بين شخصية كل أخت وأخرى في النهاية، حيث يجدن الحب والسعادة الدائمتين.
