Publisher's summary

What kind of person does it take to build a civilization from the ground up? In this fun hard science fiction novel, astronaut Nick Burke will have to learn how to be a leader if he wants humanity to survive on a new planet, even if he is no longer a human himself.

Nick Burke dreams of successfully creating the first sustainable space colony in human history. After a third failed mission on Mars, Nick returns to Earth heartbroken. But during the trip home, he has an epiphany caused by a near-death experience on how to truly accomplish his dream.

Nick launches a billionaire-funded startup company that solves the interstellar travel problem. Transporting people in a spaceship without any people aboard. After Nick lands on his new, distant planet, he has to combat his greatest trials yet including raising children and goats while becoming a colony building survivalist.

Fans of Andy Weir’s The Martian and Dennis E. Taylor’s We Are Legion (We Are Bob) will find familiar themes of innovative science fiction ideas with plenty of humor and pop culture.

Fantastic book

Matthew has an impressive debut book on his hands. Although pacing was a little off to me (some spots seemed to go into too much detail while others spots were huge time jumps) it was a great read that I enjoyed very much. I looked forward to his next book!

A fun Sci Fi read

Very much the Martian meets the Bobiverse. Fun and compelling story that is easy to listen to.

Great science fiction book

I really liked this book! I think it was a little slow getting started, but don’t let that stop you. It gets really really good very quickly. This the author’s first book, and I’m sure his next one will be even better.

Glad I found this book

I think I saw the author talking about this book on Reddit and I thought I would give it a try. Narrator was fine I’m not sure if he’s new but I would listen to other books he narrates.

The author did his story the hard way without relying on magical nano printers. I went through this book in a day and was looking for excuses to listen.

Nice twist halfway through are there more stories to come from this author?

entertaining story

It was an engaging "boots on the ground" take on planet colonization. I enjoyed the humor and the character arc for Nick. I am looking forward to the sequel.

Great first book

Very impressive considering this is the author's first book. Looking forward to more from both the author, and narrator. Well done.

“Seed” by Matthew G. Dick: An Ambitious but Flawed Sci-Fi Tale

“Seed” by Matthew G. Dick presents an ambitious tale of planetary colonization through the eyes of Nick Burke, a determined engineer. Despite its intriguing premise and attempts at humor, the story’s execution falls short, lacking the narrative finesse found in Andy Weir’s works. However, the novel provokes thought on the complexities of space colonization, leadership, and the relentless human spirit. It’s a read that challenges one’s imagination about humanity’s future among the stars, even if it doesn’t fully deliver on its potential.

Really great book.

Really enjoyed this. It is reminiscent of the Bobiverse books by Dennis E. Taylor. The narration and the world building is excellent. It is a nice change from the constant flow of space marine science fiction that seems to be coming out. The only gripe I could think of would be slightly too many contemporary pop culture references. I look forward to more work by the author.

Excellent story

I almost wish this book was two. The story is very good, but skips over some key points that could have been fleshed out. That’s not really a complaint - it was so good!
