Der Hodscha Nasreddin und seine Freunde gehen eine Wette ein. Wenn der Hodscha es schaffen sollte, bis zum nächsten Morgen ohne Licht und Wärme auf dem Marktplatz zu stehen, werden sie ihm ein Festessen bereiten. Sollte er jedoch die Wette verlieren, müsse er seinen Freunden ein opulentes Mahl ausrichten. Nasreddin gewinnt die Wette, doch seine Freunde unterstellen ihm Betrug. In weiser Absicht gibt Hodscha zunächst nach, doch schon bald ergibt sich für ihn die Möglichkeit, sich an seinen misstrauischen Freunden zu rächen.
Hodscha Nasreddin soll im 13./14. Jahrhundert im südwestlichen Anatolien gelebt haben und dort ein geistlicher Lehrer gewesen sein. Seine Geschichten sind im gesamten türkisch-islamischen Raum, vom Balkan bis Zentralasien, bekannt. Seine historische Existenz jedoch ist nicht belegt. Ähnlich wie "Klein Fritzchen" im deutschsprachigen Raum ist er Hauptfigur unzähliger mündlich überlieferter Geschichten.
