Story
On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik I, and the space race was born. Desperate to beat the Russians into space, NASA put together a crew of the nation's most daring test pilots: the seven men who were to lead America to the moon. The first into space was Alan Shepard; the last was Deke Slayton, whose irregular heartbeat kept him grounded until 1975. They spent the 1960s at the forefront of NASA's effort to conquer space, and Moon Shot is their inside account of what many call the 20th century's greatest feat - landing humans on another world.

Story
In April 1970, during the glory days of the Apollo space program, NASA sent Navy Captain Jim Lovell and two other astronauts on America's fifth mission to the moon. Only 55 hours into the flight of Apollo 13, disaster struck: a mysterious explosion rocked the ship, and soon its oxygen and power began draining away. Written with all the color and drama of the best fiction, Apollo 13 (previously published as Lost Moon) tells the full story of the moon shot that almost ended in catastrophe.

In Carrying the Fire, Michael Collins conveys, in a very personal way, the drama, beauty, and humor of the adventure of reaching the moon. He also traces his development from his first flight experiences in the air force, through his days as a test pilot, to his Apollo 11 spacewalk, presenting an evocative description of the joys of flight as well as a new perspective on time, light, and movement from someone who has seen the fragile Earth from the other side of the moon.

In the most comprehensive biography on the subject yet, Gus Grissom: The Lost Astronaut offers a more personal side and fuller picture of Grissom’s life and character. Author Ray E. Boomhower explores Grissom’s life from his days as a child to his service as a combat pilot. He delves into the process by which NASA selected its original seven Mercury astronauts, the jostling for position to be the first American in space, and Grissom’s near-fatal Liberty Bell 7 flight that haunted his subsequent space career.

Dick Thornby is not Hollywood's idea of a spy. In his rough and tumble job there are no tailored Italian suits, no bimbos eager to please, and no massive underground fortresses built by evil overlords seeking world domination - just an endless series of sinister threats to the safety and security of the billions of mundane citizens of the planet. Sure, Dick's tough and he knows a few tricks to help him get out of a tight spot, even if his boss accuses him of over-reliance on an abundance of explosives.

Story
In I Wear the Black Hat, Klosterman questions the very nature of how modern people understand the concept of villainy. What was so Machiavellian about Machiavelli? Why don't we see Batman the same way we see Bernhard Goetz? Who's more worthy of our vitriol - Bill Clinton or Don Henley? What was O.J. Simpson's second-worst decision? Masterfully blending cultural analysis with self-interrogation and limitless imagination, I Wear the Black Hat delivers perceptive observations on the complexity of the anti-hero.

Millions of words have poured forth about man's trip to the moon, but until now few people have had a sense of the most engrossing side of the adventure: namely, what went on in the minds of the astronauts themselves - in space, on the moon, and even during certain odysseys on earth. It is this, the inner life of the astronauts, that Tom Wolfe describes with his almost uncanny empathetic powers that made The Right Stuff a classic.

Story
The real stories behind the scenery of America’s national parks. For 12 years, Andrea Lankford lived in the biggest, most impressive national parks in the world, working a job she loved. She chaperoned baby sea turtles on their journey to sea. She pursued bad guys on her galloping patrol horse. She jumped into rescue helicopters bound for the heart of the Grand Canyon. She won arguments with bears. She slept with a few too many rattlesnakes. Hell yeah, it was the best job in the world! Fortunately, Andrea survived it.

Story
The Blind Watchmaker, knowledgably narrated by author Richard Dawkins, is as prescient and timely a book as ever. The watchmaker belongs to the 18th-century theologian William Paley, who argued that just as a watch is too complicated and functional to have sprung into existence by accident, so too must all living things, with their far greater complexity, be purposefully designed. Charles Darwin's brilliant discovery challenged the creationist arguments; but only Richard Dawkins could have written this elegant riposte.

Interesting insight into Original Seven
I really enjoyed the story telling in this book. I have read extensively about Apollo, but it's hard to find good audio books about early spaceflight development, Mercury, and Gemini. You definitely get some inside information about the Original 7. There is a bit of soapboxing in there I could have done without, but it's mostly funny now, because the criticism is pretty out of date. The recording quality was a little up and down, but tolerable and didn't interupt the story too bad. If you're a NASA buff...you'll want to check this out.

Gotcha! Schirra's Arrogance Distracts
I am a big fan of the Apollo space program, so when I saw this one unabridged on Audible (keep those unabridged books coming, Audible), I had to give it a try. Unfortunately, Schirra's Space is a bit light on the details and a bit heavy on the "Gotchas," or practical jokes the astronauts played on each other. The jokes are fun to read about, and have their place, but they are a bit self-aggrandizing and add too much fluff. I expected a bit more from Wally Schirra, the only astronaut to fly in Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo. Perhaps he is saving his best flight stories for later.

Great Between The Lines Info on the early decades of NASA
Wally tells it like it was… the good, the bad and the stupid.
This is the best book I’ve listened to by the original NASA spacemen.

Gotcha U
This story of one of America's first pioneers into space is one that needed to be told. It was not as flashy as John Glen's story. It was not as controversial as Gordon Cooper's. It is also about the working ethics of American Test Pilots.
People who are looking for an in-depth look at Apollo will be a little disappointed. This book is about everything leading up to the Apollo 7 flight, including the fateful decision to enter the Naval Academy instead of West Point or the drawing of lots between a bomber and fighter billets.
That being said it is a wonderful journey through the hardships of the space race. It is a good counterpoint to other books of the era, such as Tom Wolff's 'The Right Stuff'. Worth the listen.

Very interesting! Well worth the read!
I was really pleasantly surprised with this book. I’ve read so much stuff on Apollo, and pretty much all the books out there now, except this one! Wally’s book gave a really good insight to the friendships amongst the astronauts, their ways of lives, and their wives etc! Well just really interesting and funny as well, well worth the listen, very well narrated too! Don’t pass by this jewel! Reg

Wally come through
I agree with other reviews that the "gotchas" and practical jokes can be a bit much but, as a former US Navy trained Coast Guard Aviator, I can very much relate to the antics that go on between pilots. Men at the very high level of performance as Wally and company simply have that much more steam to blow off. A wonderful memoir from the only guy that was right in the middle of Mercury, Gemini and Apollo. Wally tells it as he lived it. It can't get much better than that for those of us that grew up with the manned space-flight program. The accomplishments of these remarkable people caused me to become a military pilot, an experience that shaped my life in the most positive way imaginable. Audio quality leaves much to be desired but, I agree with others, it does not significantly detract from the tale.

Good Book on the Space Program
Growing up I was a huge fan ofthe space program and this book is a nice summary since Schirra was the only astronaut to fly in Mercury, Gemini and Apollo. A good read although I do agree with other readers that too much time is spent detailing practical jokes among the pilots. All in all a good book.

Good book, poor recording
Would you try another book from Wally Schirra and Richard N. Billings and/or Richard Rohan?
Who was your favorite character and why?
What didn’t you like about Richard Rohan’s performance?
What else would you have wanted to know about Wally Schirra and Richard N. Billings ’s life?
Any additional comments?
The audio quality of the recording was not very good.

Great but needs remastered audio
Great to hear Wally’s first hand accounts of the space industry and the narrator did a great job as well but for whatever reason it’s very muffled. Remaster the audio and this audio book will endure.

Disappointing
The story somehow makes the golden age of space exploration seem flat and uninteresting. The narrator has a public service announcement voice. Several portions of the book are horribly muffled and distorted.
