About this listen

New York Times best-selling author Dorothea Benton Frank returns to her magical Lowcountry of South Carolina in this bewitching story of marriage, love, family, and friendship that is infused with her warm and engaging earthy humor and generous heart.

One enchanted summer, two couples begin a friendship that will last more than 20 years and transform their lives.

A chance meeting on the Isle of Palms, one of Charleston's most stunning barrier islands, brings former sweethearts Adam Stanley and Eve Landers together again. Their respective spouses, Eliza and Carl, fight sparks of jealousy flaring from their imagined rekindling of old flames. As Adam and Eve get caught up on their lives, their partners strike up a deep friendship - and flirt with an unexpected attraction - of their own.

Year after year Adam, Eliza, Eve, and Carl eagerly await their reunion at Wild Dunes, a condominium complex at the island's tip end, where they grow closer with each passing day, building a friendship that will withstand financial catastrophe, family tragedy, and devastating heartbreak. The devotion and love they share will help them weather the vagaries of time and enrich their lives as circumstances change, their children grow up and leave home, and their twilight years approach.

Bursting with the intoxicating richness of Dorothea Benton Frank's beloved Lowcountry - the sultry sunshine, cool ocean breezes, icy cocktails, and starry velvet skies - Same Beach, Next Year is a dazzling celebration of the infrangible power of friendship, the enduring promise of summer, and the indelible bonds of love.

Not as good as I was told it would be

Many of the southern inflections were not authentic. Story line was ok. Conversations sometimes fake sounding

I loved the story and the characters. I realize this is the reading of a book, but occasionally I became frustrated with all the, 'I said', 'she said', 'he said' references. That's the only negative.

I am a great fan of Ms Frank's books, but.....

As always I love reading or listening to Dorthea Benton Frank's books. i think I have read them all, but this one put me off by the excessive "language" used, which did not add anything to the story. That's why I gave a 4 star rating for Overall. That's a first for me. Having said that, I loved the story line.

"I'd leave her, but man she can cook"... UGH

I had to return this one. I just couldn't follow a story where the husband had no conscience for his emotional cheating and the female characters were all so weak. I had about 5 hours left in the book, so perhaps it got better...but I just could suffer through any longer.

I'd Like The Author To Go Back To Her "Roots"

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Fluff. Love her writing but this was simply too much fluff. It needed the edge that her earlier books had, and the thoughtfulness of the characters.

Any additional comments?

It's a good light read, but I think could have been more interesting. This author is so capable of much more. It's a shame to waste her talent on easy plots like this.

Loved the book. Good summer read

Love stories of South Carolina. So different from California where I live. The characters were well portrayed and I loved the description of Corfu. Makes me want to go there some day

Predictable and naïve

This book was not up to the standard I’ve come to expect Dorothea Benton. The characters were shallow, and the storyline was predictable.
