About this listen

Beloved children's author Eleanor Estes has been the recipient of the Newbery Medal, several Newbery Honors, and the Certificate of Award for Outstanding Contribution to Children's Literature.

Rufus Moffat, a very lively and creative boy, stars in this charming tale set in the 1910s. Rufus is seven and he has two older sisters and one older brother. Rufus has many adventures. During one adventure he gets a library card all by himself, even before he can read! Other days, Rufus plays baseball with his sister. Rufus loves baseball, but he also hopes the team will take lots of breaks for cookies and punch.

Young listeners will delight in Christina Moore's spirited narration.

Critic reviews

"Christina Moore perfectly captures each voice, and her Rufus demonstrates the great emotional range of a small boy making discoveries as he grows up. Moore conveys an earlier time and language, never losing her listeners. An irresistible treat for listeners of all ages." (AudioFile)

Rufus and his family are very cute and funny. The author knows how to make the scenes come alive. She goes into so much detail, but it's all very entertaining.

Our whole family loves it

It is an amazing story! I liked it a lot! Most anything I was wondering and any I hadn't thought of (questions) about Rufus were answered and I found it very interesting and have listened to it several times. I hope you will like it just as much! And I recommend listening to the rest of the series as well. I have to write a 50 word book review for my summer reading program. have a wonderful day!

The story is so cute and very original! The narrator isn't awesome. She doesn't do a lot of voices.the book is still great though!

Rufus is a curious boy, who is always trying out new thing, and that is what I think that every child should do. This book, I would say is a great story for your child to listen to if there is nothing else to do. It really brighten up the child's day. But there is something else I should note, this story do have some history of wars and about being a Victory boy or girls, but everything else was just fine.

That's Rufus M.

Charming series of related stories and well-narrated by Christina Moore. My eight year old and I were previously listening fans of Pinky Pye and The Moffats, and listening to this was like returning to old friends.

Charming

It must be good.... my 5yo son has been bugging me all afternoon to let him listen to some more.

Personally, I love the audiobooks that are 2+ hours in length because they give me more bang for my buck. This one fits the bill perfectly.

Where does Rufus M. rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Its one of our favorites.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Of course, Rufus is our favorite. He's a bit scruffy, valiantly determined, humble, sincere, curious and loves his family very much.

What about Christina Moore’s performance did you like?

Moore handles the different characters so well you lose yourself in the story and hardly realize that just one person is creating all these different people.

Any additional comments?

This book is on our daughter's second grade read aloud list, but our younger children have really enjoyed listening to it also.

Yea for Rufus!

I enjoyed listening to this book. It reminded me of my grandmother. Little Rufus is a determined boy and he is persistent. Written as though the time were WW1, the story covers things unique to this era. Victory gardens, oleomargarine and the orange coloring capsule, badges and knitting for the war effort are some of the things explained in this book. The culture of society was extremely different than today. Machine made wash cloths and socks, working to give money to the war effort and food rations have taken the sense of accomplishment away from the people. We need to be needed and this book shows that concept well.

My 5 and 7 year old sons LOVE this book. The story touches on so many things near and dear to children that you don't even notice that it was set during the WWII era. My wife and I found our selves chuckling and rooting for Rufus right along with our kids. Perfect for long rides in the car!

For a frame of reference- we also loved the Stuart Little reading narrated Julie Harris.

Great Reading of a really charming story
