About this listen

Alice Rothmann has been content with her quiet, ordinary life in Oxford, with her quiet, ordinary husband. But, when he dies suddenly, she finds herself adrift and lonely, and before she knows it, she's deeply attracted to her neighbour, George Graham. There's only one hitch: George is married to Alice's best friend....

Note to listeners: While this is a standalone companion novella to The War in Our Hearts, this work does contain a major spoiler for The War in Our Hearts.

Excellent Short Love Story

I’ve not read The War in Our Hearts but it didn’t matter. This short story drew me in from the first few sentences and never let go. The narrator is excellent, too.

Widowed Alice is barren and therefore loves her neighbors and their children more that she would have. The girls are a delight, even if her friend Maggie, their mother is self-absorbed. Alice can forgive this though, for she’s certainly mistreated—by being unloved—by her husband, George. And yet, Alive doesn’t hate George for it. Then, one night, he shows up on her own door step. What’s a widow to do?

I’m always impressed by those who can contain a fully fleshed out story within a very few number of words. Better yet, this captivating audio is the perfect length for a morning walk. Recommend!

Sad

A novella that needed to be longer. The ending felt abrupt. Wonderful narration by Jayne Entwhistle.
