Doesn’t shy away from difficult issues, reassuring, original

At first, this book covered the basics I’d heard in many pet grief books. I’m glad I continued listening, because it soon covered issues the other books didn’t. I found the personal stories very powerful, especially the way they examined feelings of guilt and responsibility for the pet’s death. I have rarely seen topics such as accidents, receiving an unhealthy pet from a breeder, lost pets, and the feelings brought up by these tragic circumstances. I have lived with terrible guilt for being unable to pay for expensive hospital care for a pet, at certain points in life, to attempt to save their life. This, despite the fact that I can’t pay for out of pocket medical expenses for my own serious illness, to extend my life. I have never felt my guilt was so well understood as I do, after reading this book. I love that the author treats the loss of a hamster, chicken, cat, or dog equally. There is no hierarchy of love. I wish there were more stories included about supernatural pet encounters, which were only touched on. I would love it if she wrote a sequel, and expounded on her experiences (and others’)! Please be warned that the book begins by talking about how to handle a pet’s terminal illness, enjoy your last days together, etc. I read it just after losing the cat love of my life, and it brought that time back. You may want to skip that part if your loss is still raw, but I’m glad I didn’t, in the end. I was relieved to find I’d done many of the recommended things, like focusing on my time with my living cat (not only on his dying), making preparations, and listening to meditations with him, specifically a story where the reader said his name over and over. He loved it! I did find the description of the euthanasia process a bit romanticized…the book didn’t discuss times when euthanasia is traumatic, or the animal appears distressed (even if it’s just postmortem movement, sometimes). Before I found 3 stage euthanasia (pre-sedation, anesthetic, and then euthanasia), it didn’t seem peaceful for some. I have allowed some to pass at home, but I hope I always know a vet who performs this, if it’s necessary. Guilt over euthanasia was discussed, and I felt freed from isolation with these feelings. Overall, it was a wonderful book, which has greatly helped me with my healing. I will probably read it again, though it is not light reading…be prepared to cry (a healthy part of the healing process). Just make sure you take some time to practice good self care while reading. I listened, laughed, cried, took breaks, and came back to it. I’m so glad I did!

Repairing for the loss of your pet

I was in tears constantly. I didn’t know who to turn to. I was counting the months, the weeks, the days, and yes, even the hours of when my Micah , my German shorthaired pointer died. He lived a good life, and I know that I was a great mother to him. I had to euthanize him on February 7, 2024. He was very sick, had cancer of the liver. When they told me about this, he was still eating, and looked like he was fine. The veterinarian told me it was just a matter of days/weeks until this bubble burst inside of him and he would be in horrible agony when it did. There was no afterwards about it. I automatically told the veterinarian yes we need to euthanize him through my tears. We did so the next day. I do not feel guilty about this, because when I had another dog years ago, I kept him alive for me, not the dog. His name was Zachary. I really feel like the last nine weeks of Zachary‘s life. We’re not quality weeks. I actually think when I look back that he was in pain. I promised myself I would never do that again. That one of my animals started to lose their quality of life, I wouldn’t keep them alive for myself. I’ve done so ever since then, and that’s been 20 years ago. As far as Micah is concerned. I don’t think I’ll ever get another dog. I became disabled when I got him from an accident, and there he was every single day, every minute for me. I know they say you don’t compare when you get another dog, however, I know I would, compare any animal to him again. I don’t know when this grieving process will be over, it’s been three months now, and is still as raw as the day he died. I guess I will end this with the thought of knowing that at least the grieving process has no timeline. Good luck to everyone who is reading this. You can never really prepare.

Really helped

Beautifully explained. I listed to this as I fell asleep every night after losing my sweet dog 4 days ago. I feel seen, heard and comforted as I grieve. It was also really helpful with understanding my feelings around getting another pet one day and managing guilt. 10/10 recommend.
