Publisher's summary

As a washed-up and forgotten sorcerer, Aldric’s only goal in life is to get drunk enough to forget his tragic past. That is, until his friends coerce him into a teaching position at one of the most prestigious magic academies in the world. Now he’s saddled with the responsibility of teaching four new pupils, all of whom wonder who this brilliant yet unorthodox man truly is.

But Aldric’s past demons aren’t gone. They’ve only been lying in wait. As wars, rulers, and politics all begin to catch up with him, Aldric’s newfound place to belong is threatened by the very things he’s been trying to escape.

It’s time for Aldric to finally confront his past. And learn some new lessons himself.

Short, Sweet, and Well-Paced

Remedial Magic has a solid cast of characters and a strong tempo that never seems to bog down with exposition, yet successfully builds up an interesting setting. I look forward to the next book, as I feel like a lot of this book was just groundwork.

good story

This was an enjoyable listen. Not my regular thing but it kept me interested. I would say it seems more like a YA book. The narration was decent and audio was good.

Heavily inspired

If you've seen the anime Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor or read the light novels of the same name, you can see a lot of inspiration the author pulled from. It's a good book in its own right, but it's hard not to compare the two, at least for me.

🌺Great 1st Read, Book #1 Mr.Gregg's new Remedial Magic Series!! You'll become immersed in the story .

🌺Loved this story. Book 1 got off with a great start, and I can't wait to read the entire series!! I found a this story to be a fantastic escape from my stressful day to day schedule... 🌺 This first book ended too soon for me, but... good thing I already bought book 2. Will start listening tomorrow evening! But seriously, this is a really great read, I am glad I was offered an ARC read, and I am totally hooked! Smile... Mr. Gregg does a meticulous job of bringing Aldric and all the characters in this story to life, he has a way of using details and descriptions that emmerse you into his world, as the characters become relatable, they feel as if they are comming to life...and you feel as if your really there, as everything around you melts away. A "great" author can bring his story and characters to life, and Mr.Gregg has when his main character is developed this way, in addition to his other characters made the story emersive, with a good solid paced plot.

I enjoyed this story, seeing it is from the perspective of a professor in a magic school setting. I became emersed in the characters! Magic school scenarios are prevalent in fantasy settings, but usually told from the perspective of a student. Walking in the shoes of a progessor mage, is a refreshing perspective that gave that made this story so imersive and enjoyable. If your fav story setting ismagic schools, with a magic system so well mapped out it feels real to the story's world, add compelling characters you can feel for, you definitely need to give this series a read, you won't soon forget it and you will feel compelled to read on!

There are several interwoven threads that weave you into the plot. First of all, the school and the magic system is so well thought out it will weave you into a new reality.
"Nevis Academy" is NOT a "Hogwarts" clone.
Second, Aldric is a hero, an extraordinary character who NEVER gives up. This story takes you into it's intriguing storyline and as you journey into it, the mysterious past begins to unravel.... I am hooked, and you will also find yourself itchingly compelled to start book 2 !

A New Favorite

STORY; I was slow to pick this up, worrying it was just another arcane college book filled with precocious teens outwitting the bumbling adults -both good and evil - that are supposed to actually teach them something. Please don’t misunderstand: the teens are there but this is not solely their book.

This book is more about the adults in the room - particularly Aldric - with a backstory that evolves and informs the lessons being taught. There is action and humor with events taking place both inside and outside the school grounds with the occasional shift of viewpoint to keep things interesting. The writing is good enough that you can actually understand the nuances of the adult behaviors based upon the scene as written rather than having to endure listening to every stray thought that goes through a character’s mind. Impressively enough this includes the teenagers.

Excellent story with compelling hints of things to come both past and future..

NARRATION; In all honesty the narration initially put me off a bit. This is my first listen to Griffin Puatu and my first impression was that he was hitting the consonants hard enough to be jarring. (This is most certainly a subjective opinion and may not bother others in the least.) In any case it did not take long for my initial qualms to disappear. At no point was there any confusion as to who was speaking and I became completely immersed in the story. Bravo.

All in all this was a fun listen and I would definitely like to listen to the rest of this series. Thoroughly recommended.

Super Magical Training

Exciting story. Excellent character development. Underlying mystery alluded to but not divulged. At least a couple more books in the series. Likeable curmudgeon main character. Very creative magic. I was given a copy of the book, However I am voluntarily posting an honest review.

Wars, rulers, and politics all begin to catch up!

Remedial Magic: A New Start by Nathan Gregg, narrated by the stellar Griffin Puatu, is a magical ride with heart and humor. Aldric, the washed-up sorcerer, is thrust into an academy where “wars, rulers, and politics all begin to catch up with him.” The writing is sharp, and Puatu's performance brings Aldric’s journey to life with just the right touch of charm and wit.
