About this listen

This program is read by the author.

A guide to all kinds of addiction from a star who has struggled with heroin, alcohol, sex, fame, food, and eBay, that will help addicts and their loved ones make the first steps into recovery.

"This manual for self-realization comes not from a mountain but from the mud.... My qualification is not that I am better than you but I am worse." (Russell Brand)

With a rare mix of honesty, humor, and compassion, comedian and movie star Russell Brand mines his own wild story and shares the advice and wisdom he has gained through his 14 years of recovery. Brand speaks to those suffering along the full spectrum of addiction - from drugs, alcohol, caffeine, and sugar addictions to addictions to work, stress, bad relationships, digital media, and fame. Brand understands that addiction can take many shapes and sizes and how the process of staying clean, sane, and unhooked is a daily activity. He believes that the question is not "why are you addicted?" but "what pain is your addiction masking? Why are you running - into the wrong job, the wrong life, the wrong person's arms?"

Russell has been in all the 12-step fellowships going, he's started his own men's group, he's a therapy regular and a practiced yogi - and while he's worked on this material as part of his comedy and previous best sellers, he's never before shared the tools that really took him out of it, that keep him clean and clear. Here he provides not only a recovery plan but an attempt to make sense of the ailing world.

Featured Article: For Women Thinking About Stopping Drinking, ‘Quit Lit’ Can Help

Just as women have spent the past few decades being marketed wine and cocktails as uniquely suited to their lifestyle, many are now questioning narrow treatments for alcohol abuse and proposing another way. The growing genre of "Quit Lit" runneth over with audiobooks, memoirs, and podcasts specifically for women—and whether you’re detoxing for Dry January, moderating, or trying to quit for good, they could be exactly what you need to hear.

Very helpful.

The repetition is a bit daunting. I do realize its necessity. The only way to drive these messages home is to repeat, repplay, and relive them. As an atheist, participating in certain 12 step programs can be a challenge due to their heavy christian undertones. They turn me off. Russell has a way of making it more neutral and easier to relate to. I highly recommend this book to everyone. We all have gaps and lacking. This can help.

Blessings, Russell.

Thank you for writing this, for your candor and for trying so hard to identify and amend your own addictions and behaviors so much so that you help those of us who also struggle by giving us a clearer viewpoint of our own issues while at the same time reminding us of the universal truth... we are not alone.

Worth your time

Even those without a explicit addiction can benefit from this book. Loved it, even the the god talk was present.

Raw, unfiltered poetry presents ancient wisdom

I've given five stars to books in the past, now I wish I hadn't. Or rather: I wish there was a sixth star for those special books that stands out.
Even if you'd get nothing out the facts and the wisdom in this book - which would be a fuckin miracle - I STILL would recommend you reading it for the pure POETRY.
I will listen to this book many times over. Sometimes to freshen up on the facts and other times just to enjoy the raw, unfiltered poetry this man has to offer.
This book was a needle in the arm and veins full of inspiration into personal development and creativity.

I listened for someone else’s addiction....until it became about me

It wasn’t long into the audio version that I realized I was listening more for myself than to support the recovery process of someone else. I loved everything about this book. Mad respect for Russell and I am grateful because it was THIS book that helped me to see and admit some very unhealthy behaviors of my own.

A seven hours-long speaker meeting

A fantastic supplement for 21rst century living, particularly for those embarking on a 12 step program and who find the usual literature from the '30's a bit dull.
