About this listen

In the most candid and compelling sports memoir since Andre Agassi's riveting bestseller Open, former San Francisco 49er, Super Bowl champion, NFL MVP, and Hall of Famer Steve Young gives listeners an unprecedented and stunning inside look at what it takes to become a super-elite professional quarterback.

Steve Young was not expected to become one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. A devout Mormon, he had a perfect GPA in school, studied Latin and calculus, and was blessed with a photographic memory. His mother pleaded that he not play football. But Young was determined to become the next Roger Staubach.

QB tells the story of a boy with a gentle demeanor who overcame personal fears and his teammates' and coaches' indifference to reach the pinnacle of America's most violent game. Football was a test and a quest: listed eighth on the depth chart at Brigham Young University, Young was told he'd never play quarterback in college. He went on to endure intense media scrutiny as the highest-paid player in sports history before he ever stepped on the field as a professional. As a 49er, he went head-to-head with the legendary Joe Montana in what became the NFL's greatest quarterback controversy.

But Young's biggest hurdles were invisible to the public: the physical pain that comes with being an ordinary-size man in a league of giants; the loneliness of playing sixteen seasons as a bachelor; and an undiagnosed case of separation anxiety that made him dread getting out of bed and caused him to vomit in locker room bathrooms before games. Through sheer grit, Young put on a helmet week after week, season after season, leading his team to a Super Bowl championship, endearing himself to both the city of San Francisco and football fans everywhere.

I was blessed to be at BYU when Jim McMahon and Steve Young were QBs. I saw all of their home games. Jim was great, but Steve was the best. He is what BYU is all about, and this book both confirmed what I already knew about him but also added things I couldn't have known, even as one of his biggest fans. I enjoyed it from start to finish - even the credits were interesting!

Interesting how his faith always took second place until after football. His parents enabled his weaknesses. For as tough as his dad seems, he sure let Steve whine Also, while the leader of his church asked church members to be more observant of the Sabbath Day and participate less in recreational TV, Steve encouraged members to watch football. Like an ancient prophet said, people would not listen because of the actions of another.

Kind of a Winer

Steve Young's Career - A Delightful Paradox

So much revealed of what Steve Young held privately during his career. The only negative is that Young only narrates the first and last chapter. The narrator for the rest of the book was obviously not a football fan. Many of the players names were mispronounced.

A nice story of a great player

Reading Steve Young's autobiography, “QB” was uplifting. As a Mormon myself, the church has always taught us to be modest, humble and always willing to help. Being a quarterback for the most well known team in the world must have been really difficult because of temptations, but Steve Young stayed true to the Word of Wisdom. Many memoirs are all about the person, putting all of the spotlight on them and only them. Young briefly talks about himself, his glory, or his conquests. Most of the book is about other people, his faith, and what is more important.

#8 is a good dude.

I already had much respect for Steve Young but gained much more respect for him after this book! Definitely worth your time to listen to it!

Great book!

This was a great book and I learned a lot I did not know. The book overall was narrated horribly. If you cannot pronounce players' names correctly you should not be narrating a sports book.

Narrated Horribly
