About this listen

King Alfred never achieved his dream of uniting the disparate Anglo-Saxon kingdoms into one Perfecta Saxonia.

The man destined to fulfill Alfred's dream is his grandson, Athelstan, as the spark of unity begins in the Saxon kingdom of Wessex. Abandoned by his father and raised by his uncle, young Athelstan faces numerous adversities on his way to becoming a mighty warrior and diplomat.

But can he overcome the odds to transform England from an insignificant island off the Western European mainland, into the leading centre of 10th-century diplomacy and learning?

Discover the story of one of the most important English kings, who put in place the foundations of modern-day England.

A Saxon Story

This tells the story of the unification of England under Alfred over several year from the Saxon viewpoint. Focused on the lives of the characters rather than the battles, it shows how the many fractured kingdoms came together. if you enjoyed Bernard Cornwell's Last Kingdom I believe you will enjoy this book. I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

It's okay

The storyline and content itself was okay. If you're a fan of Anglo Saxon history, then you'll enjoy it. My only issue was the narration. Unfortunately the narrator sounds like Jeffrey from Game of Throwns. He even has that whiney smugness in the tone of his voice.

Overall the book was good and I recommend it.

Fabulous

As a historian and genealogist, this story aligns with my own ancestry. I loved the narrator, and the historical accuracy. I have always wanted to be able to read a book like this, it satisfies A basic desire to know what our ancestors may have been like.in order to learn what our ancestors may have really been like At a personal level.

Brazen plagiarism

This book is poorly written, non-compelling tripe. To say that it is a poorly plagiarized reworking of Bernard Cornwell’s Last Kingdom series gives it an unwarranted compliment. The narration is saved only by its unintended comical mispronunciations.
