The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

When editor Susan Ryeland is given the manuscript of Alan Conway's latest novel, she has no reason to think it will be much different from any of his others. After working with the best-selling crime writer for years, she's intimately familiar with his detective, Atticus Pünd, who solves mysteries disturbing sleepy English villages. An homage to queens of classic British crime such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, Alan's traditional formula has proved hugely successful.

Four women from the slums of Berlin have turned up dead, all with identical markings etched into their backs, and Hoffner and Fichte have spent the better part of six weeks trying to crack the bizarre case.

Good Read
Elizabeth George is a terrific writer. The Lynley Havers series is great. But I could listen to Davina Porter read, well anything. She is superb.

The main characters come to life quickly but
The suspects trapped in a hotel, Agatha Christy -style, were hard to keep sorted. I decided about midway through I didn’t care whodunit and would just concentrate on the tensions between Lynley and his friends. There was enough of that to keep my interest to the end.

Enjoyable, but dated
Generally, I love Davina Porter, but I found her characterization of both Havers and Lynley to be discordant and her male voices not to be as good as usual. Her Helen was delightful.
As a modern police procedural, this seems very dated with no cellphones and limited computer usage. Finding clues by going through trunks for old theatre programs seems very hit or miss now.

Masterful Twists & Turns
I'm working my way through the Inspector Lynley mysteries and am impressed with the complexity of the stories. I can usually figure out American police procedurals but this one evaded me. And Donada Peters has become the voicee of the series characters for me. Well done!

Fair for Elizabeth George
I have read the 7 or 8 most recent Inspector Lynley novels and am a big fan. I went back to this which was an earlier book in the series and found the story only fair and it seemed to drag on, a bit tedious at times.

Murder Mystery set in an old Scottish Manor House
I enjoyed this mystery. The one thing I wish I had done was jot down the character names and how they were related as I listened to the first couple chapters. It gets really confusing because the suspects are all associated with a theater troupe and many are related. There are many different story lines going on and it was fascinating to see how the author wove them together at the end - surprising Lynley, Havers, and me! There are a lot of twists, intrigue, and several red herrings.
I would definitely recommend reading the first book in this series, "A Great Deliverance," before this one.
The narrator did a great job and I can't wait to read the next in series!

Ok
There were so many characters and different story lines and such a long book that it was hard to keep track of what was going on. Except that it was not hard to see the main character's prejudice. After a while, it just became noise. But I won't give up on this author.
