About this listen

Since the age of 21, Paul McCartney has lived one of the ultimate rock 'n' roll lives, played out on the most public of stages. Now Paul's story is told by rock music's foremost biographer, with McCartney's consent and access to family members and close friends who have never spoken on the record before.

Paul McCartney: The Life reveals the complex character behind the façade and sheds new light on his childhood - blighted by his mother's death but redeemed by the father who introduced him to music. This is the first definitive account of Paul's often troubled partnership with John Lennon, his personal trauma after the Beatles' breakup, and his subsequent struggle to get back to the top with Wings - which nearly got him murdered in Africa and brought him nine days in a Tokyo jail.

Listeners will learn about his marriage to Linda, including their much-criticized musical collaboration, and a moving account of her death. Packed with new information and critical insights, Paul McCartney: The Life will be the definitive biography of a musical legend.

Critic reviews

"If you’re not a fan of Paul McCartney when you start this book, you will be when you’re done. Narrator Jonathan Keeble recounts McCartney's life story... It would have been criminal to have an American read Philip Norman's tell-all book. Keeble's delightful British accent makes it sound real.... Overall, McCartney comes across as a great musician, caring father, and incredible human being." (AudioFile)

Wow... from a long time Beatle Fan

I've read a few books about the Beatles and considered myself fairly knowledgeable. This book adds so much more to the humanity of McCarney while shining a light on almost super human qualities. A real inspiration to struggling musicians.

And in the End....

I LOVED this book, was so sad it ended. Felt like I spent weeks with Paul and family, but enjoyed every minute of it. I am going thru withdrawal now.

Thorough and excellent!!

The book is a thorough and fair summary of the AMAZING and REMARKABLE life of McCartney. The author is a self admitted Lennon fan but even he ends beyond impressed at the life of Paul. The book covers his musical and personal life in vivid detail, and again with a fair viewpoint of both!! Very good listen for sure!!

A great book to get to know Paul McCartney better

A wonderful book all the way around. Paul McCartney was not my favorite Beatle before I read the book, but he is now! I have gained a whole new respect for him. This book was well-written and well told. I do recommend it.

The one and only McCartney biography you need to read

I am a big Beatles fan and I have read many books about the Beatles and Paul McCartney. Philip Norman has done an amazing job in interweaving so many interesting stories about the Beatles and specifically Paul McCartney. He takes us through the long and winding road from the beginning of McCartney school years all the way up to his divorce from Heather Mills and subsequent marriage to Nancy and through his amazing Out There tour in 2015. If you are a Beatles fan you'll definitely enjoy this book!

Best book I’ve listened to this year

This was an outstanding read in so many ways. From the history of the Beatles rise, writing the music, the confrontations within the group, his marriages, children, Wings and beyond, are detailed and read superbly.
