Sensory processing disorder (SPD) is a medical condition which affects how your brain processes sensory information, or stimuli. Sensory information includes things you can touch, hear, taste, or smell. SPD can affect all of your senses, just one of your senses, or somewhere in between. What makes SPD so tricky is that in can cause one of two things, which are complete opposites:
- It can cause you to be overly sensitive to stimuli that other people are not
- It can take more stimuli to impact you
In Parenting the SPD Child: Strategies for Helping Your Child with Sensory Processing Disorder, we will cover a lot of ground.
We will start by looking at exactly what SPD looks like in children. Then, we will go over the top 10 signs of SPD in children, followed by a self-test you can take if you think your child may have SPD. We will then look at an entire chapter on ways you can support yourself, titled “99 Self-Care Ideas for SPD Parents”. We will then jump into what a sensory diet looks like, "did you know it actually has nothing to do with food?"
Next, there is a chapter covering 10 steps to make parenting a child with SPD easier, followed by a chapter with 15 tips to help your child with clothing sensitivities. Finally, we will look at 65 things sensory parents want you to know, as well as 10 mistakes to avoid when parenting a child with SPD. We will conclude with how to explain SPD to your family and friends.
