About this listen

Unfortunately, children don’t come with operating instructions, so raising even the most compliant kids can sometimes be disconcerting. Acknowledging that some youngsters are more challenging than others, Dr. James Dobson offers real help with establishing parent-child relationships, maintaining sanity, and banishing guilt. A Doctor of Philosophy in child development and the founder of the international organization Focus on the Family, Dr. Dobson has become one of America’s most respected family therapists. Drawing on a landmark study of 35,000 parents, as well as on his experience as both a professional and a parent, the author offers valuable advice on every aspect of parenting. This insightful best-seller offers parents the opportunity to find fulfillment in every stage of parenting, from bringing children into the world to letting them go. Narrator John McDonough’s reassuring voice inspires a healthy dose of parenting confidence.

Still applicable - Especially in the age of chaos

This book on parenting spurs and encourages the parental unit to hold fast to tried and true values, founded in biblical principles, for stubborn children. It’s focus is more on the strong willed child, which makes reading Dr. Dobson’s “The New Strong Willed Child” a must; they complement each other very well. I would recommend this book to any parent that is seeking to raise their children to be successful, kind, loving and beneficial contributing members of society.

Very Good Read

I strongly recommend this book for any parent and to maybe read it over again when feeling discouraged as a parent.....we aren't perfect, this book however encourages you to keep working and points out how "normal" it is to feel defeated, but to never loose heart. The only negative is if you have read other Parenting Books by Dr. Dobson, such as, "The Strong Willed Child" & "Bringing Up Boys", it does repeat some of the same stories/examples. But they can always be reiterated!

Great book by Dr. Dobson!

Great book by Dr. Dobson! The narrator was very good except for mispronouncing "Danae" (Da-nay).

closed minded, dated, sexist, and abusive

What disappointed you about Parenting Isn’t for Cowards?

I could barely listen to this book. The sample given has a cute story that made me buy the book. The next five minutes after the sample the author basically lumps homosexuality in with hard drug use as deviant behavior. He also thinks you should hit your kids to teach them who is boss. If you want to raise your kids that way and you want cute stories to go with it here is the book for you.

What was most disappointing about James Dobson’s story?

His closed mind

What does John McDonough bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

he is a good reader.

What character would you cut from Parenting Isn’t for Cowards?

the author.
