About this listen

A Texas map marked with three red dots like drops of blood. A serial killer who claims to have dementia. A mysterious young woman who wants answers. What could go wrong?

Finalist for the ITW Thriller Award

"Fast and furious... You'll never see what's coming." (The Washington Post)

Years ago, her sister Rachel vanished. Now, she is almost certain the man who took Rachel sits in the passenger seat beside her. He claims to have dementia and no memory of murdering girls across Texas in a string of places where he shot eerie pictures. To find the truth, she proposes a dangerous idea: a 10-day road trip with a possible serial killer to examine cold cases linked to his haunting photographs.

Is he a liar or a broken old man? Is he a pathological con artist - or is she?

You won’t see the final terrifying twist spinning your way until the very last mile.

Critic reviews

"[An] artful and elegiac psychological thriller... Heaberlin brilliantly combines travelogue with a heartbreaking portrait of the damage done by childhood.... [She] wields words like weapons, with each one chosen to heighten tension, underscore emotion, or foreshadow doom." (Publishers Weekly)

I loved this story from page one. Grace and Carl were so well fleshed out. I found myself attached to both of their character's. Having loved family members with Alzheimers had a bitter sweet feel. I adore this writers style and stories. An excellent ten star read. Narrator Ms. Taber is fantastic!!!

Wish I could give Paper Ghosts 10 stars!

at the very end of the book, I decided I liked it. It did start slow and was hard to understand or get into....a weird book.

confusing and slow

The storyline was interesting, kept me guessing until the end, although nearing the end I suspected it wasn’t going to end as the main character hoped. The narration was performed very well, kept me wanting to keep listening to the story. It was a great entertaining listen, and I will likely look for more books by this author.

Great thriller

And clever, I think the complex characters well well drawn and no matter what you thought might be the case nothing is black and white

Enthralling

Story line was decent. Drawn out a bit and had me wishing for the ending long before the story ended.

Loved this story but WAY overuse of figurative language interfered with flow! Julia Heaberlin is a very good storyteller and develops characters but the overuse of figurative language got a bit annoying in this one book. Still highly recommend.

"A Riveting Thriller with a Twist: 'Paper Ghosts' Earns Four Stars for Its Gripping Plot"

"Paper Ghosts" is a suspenseful thriller that had me eagerly turning pages until the very end. The author crafts a tantalizing plot filled with unexpected twists and a relentless sense of tension. The characters are well-drawn and complex, adding depth to the narrative. The exploration of memory, identity, and the blurred line between reality and illusion adds an intriguing layer to the story. However, there were moments when the pacing felt uneven, and some plot elements required a greater level of development. Nevertheless, "Paper Ghosts" is an engaging and satisfying read for fans of the genre, offering a cleverly constructed mystery that will keep you guessing.
