Acerca de esta escucha

The library once stood proud as a beacon of magic and power. For five hundred years, it has been broken.

Quinn can barely handle her own life. When the Library of Everywhere discovers her compatible magical signature, suddenly, she is the sole existing potential librarian. Now, it's not only the weight of her world on her shoulders—Quinn must connect with the library system before the universe itself disintegrates.

Once she's settled, it should be quiet, peaceful work—just as soon as she battles a few engorged bookworms, repairs hundreds of years of damage, and figures out why there's been no librarian for the last several centuries.

And once that's done she can start gathering overdue books. All 18,042 of them to start.

There'll be a helluva lot of late fees to process.

Who wouldn't want to be a chosen librarian, restoring a treasured library? The premise is promising but the characters don't really fit the story. They are too snappy with each other instead of banding together to help. The characters don't act in a way that supports their descriptions. I like both this author and narrator but together the book is a little dour.

Decent story, snappy characters

I expected to love this book, but the main character doesn't really reach me. There are moments when she appeals, but it's a long book, and became frustrating when it didn't truly engage me. There are many strong premises but they don't become pivotal in my mind as something I care about deeply. Overall the story didn't capture my fancy as I had expected and hoped. Andrea Parsneau is a fabulous reader but needs incredible writing behind her, like The Wandering Inn, which is why I tried this book. If I miss part of a book through distraction or running into the kitchen, I 'rewind' but stopped doing that in the last half of the book.

Not as engaging as I hoped

I like the idea behind this novel. There is a massive cross-dimensional library that touches just about every civilization and runs by magic. Unfortunately, the library has been rudderless for about five hundred years while it searches for a new librarian. During that time, it has just about run out of power and can no longer manage its primary function, which is to keep civilization going and prevent wild magic from forming. And if you think about it, that makes a tremendous amount of sense. What is a better symbol of civilization than a library?

Unfortunately, not everyone likes civilization and certain parties have been at work trying to destroy the library. One of the tactics used was to find and kill potential new librarians so that the library would never be able to be properly managed again. That is where the story starts—five hundred years with no one at the helm—when the library discovers a person who is suited for the job. The only problem is that this young human woman comes from a civilization that does not believe in magic and has never heard of “the” library.

So, great concept, but the implementation left me wanting. It starts out well enough with problems created out of puns—like bookworms. But the longer the book went on, the less interested I became. I’m glad I read it. The concept intrigued me, but I don’t plan to continue with the series.

Great Concept

I have been weary of RPG style books, I grew up with D&D but just didn't see how a book full of tracking character stats an quest like formats would be a story that felt seamless and smooth. I just felt it would fill bog down, confusing and a ton of numbers to try to keep track of.
My mom got the book because her like I love books featuring a library, librarian and filled with humor. She had it playing as usual while cleaning up in the kitchen and I caught a few minutes of it, based on how it made me laugh an seemed truly interesting. So I took the bait and got to listening.
I am so so so glad I did. Not only did I instantly connect with the unique, vivid and quick witted characters, I found myself really enjoying the way this author used the RPG format, allowing it to be there but very smooth and truly easy to catch in to.
The story line somehow took a well used troup of opran being sucked into a foreign world and made it completely new fresh and left me obsessed with how wide open the plot was leaving you unable to guess where an how it would develop from here. Something that happens really rarely for me as I read over 300 books a year and can usually read the first chapter or two then pretty much be able to call the basics will play out.
Then there is the narrator....now I have a few I'm a die hard fan for, Amanda Roncolli being the Queen Bee of that list. Andrea blew me away!!! like I had to keep checking for co-narrators because the voices and personalities she pulls off with such natural ease was absolutely was completely amazing. I will not only be getting the next books of this series but will 1000% be only litsening to this series and then start devouring everything of hers (and most likely checking out KT's other books as well) that I can find.
Over all this book is like taking Belle, the Talking Furniture and turning Beast's library in the entire castle, then through in a foreign living tech system with a book based magical learning theme all the while sprinkling a dash of Lord of the rings, Earth's pop culture and some aspects of the 80s cartoon Dungeons and Dragons like the part of character being skilled but vastly different with humorously humanlike flaws having to relay on an all knowing but only cryptically revealing Dungeon Master as their mentor (who is more hologram most of then time than actually present)!!!
Trust me it all comes together creating a world, storyline and cast of characters that will grab your attention and never let go!! Links, Quinn, Malachi and of Dottie has already claimed a forever place in my heart, they have definitely been added to the top of my will buy in paperback to add to my top characters shrine shelf.

This book has hit a particularly right spot for me. I enjoy great world and adventures, but there is honestly too much going on in the world. This book felt like listening to a great story with friends and able to enjoy without feeling stressed. Like feeling that through their work things will work out on the end. Definitely looking forward to the rest of the series

exciting but not stressful

At first I was unsure if I was going to like this book but I’m SO glad I stuck with it! I just finished listening to the second book right after this one and the story keeps getting better and fascinating developments keep building! A world I’d love to be sucked into. Well worth a listen!

The main expository character is an exercise in frustration, and as he is one of the only people the main character talks to towards the beginning of the story, that is even more frustration. He constantly is frustrated with the main character's ignorance when she has no way of knowing things, but then results explaining anything, expecting her to just know, then complaining when she does things wrong. I was unable to continue a couple hours in. The narrator was great, just the writing she had to deal with failed to engage me.

Frustrating Characters

The story is quirky. The main character is sarcastic and a bit snarky. The ideas are from a very different perspective. Despite all of these winning parts of the book, it is sometimes hard to read and the story is all over the place. I find my mind wondering in some areas where the story has stalled or the author is working through some internal gymnastics to explain something. The story is unique and has some good parts. I'm putting book 2 in my wishlist and will likely pick it up eventually.

I want to love it

I wasn't sure what I was going to get into. oh boy was I surprised and loved every single moment of it. I really can't wait to see what the library has in-store.

a beautiful story.
