About this listen

The small community of Akranes is devastated after a young man dies in a mysterious house fire. When Detective Elma and her colleagues from West Iceland CID discover the fire was arson, they become embroiled in an increasingly perplexing case. For the dead man's final online search raises fears that they could be investigating not one murder, but two.

A few months before the fire, a young Dutch woman takes a job as an au pair in Iceland, desperate to make a new life for herself after the death of her father. But the seemingly perfect family who employs her turns out to have problems of its own, and she soon discovers she is running out of people to turn to. As the police begin to home in on the truth, Elma finds herself in mortal danger—someone has secrets they'll do anything to hide....

Liked this

I did enjoy the story and found the narrative good. Two issues, the first being my own unfamiliarity with the names. I worked it out after listening for a bit. The second was the lack of narrator pause between each scene. I would be listening intently to one story line and then suddenly confused as to what was going on. Too often I had to jump back the 30 or 60 seconds to get back on track. Good author, good story, good narration, I just need a couple beats between story scenes and lines to smooth it out for my own brain. I would recommend with a heads up to the crowding.

preposterous and very badly written

perhaps this reads better in the original Icelandic but i doubt it. an unbelievably convoluted story very clumsily told. and it doesn't help matters that the central detective Elma displays the inarticulacy and stupidity of a teenager - truly aggravating. no more of this series for me.

Babies, womanizers and murder

This book is a strange mix of exploring the inner life women who want babies, soap opera philandering and cold blooded murder. Of course there is a crazed wife who abetts the crime. It gave me a sickening feeling- like if this is what Iceland is I wanted to escape.
