About this listen

Wall Street Journal bestselling author Charlie N. Holmberg builds her bewitching world of beasts and betrayal as the Numina Series continues.

Sandis has escaped Kazen’s grasp, but she finds herself unmoored, reeling from her thief friend Rone’s betrayal.

Kazen has been hurt but not stopped, and he’ll do anything to summon the monster that could lay waste to the entire world. Sandis knows she must be the one to stop him, but with her own trusted numen now bound to another, and finding herself with no one she can trust, she is in desperate need of allies. Rone seems determined to help her, but Sandis has no intention of letting him get close to her again. What she doesn’t know is how much Rone gave up to protect her. Or how much more he is willing to give up to keep her safe.

As chaos mounts, Sandis must determine whom to trust. After all, the lines between enemy and ally have never been less clear…and corruption lurks in the most unlikely of places.

Even Better than the First One

I think I liked this book even better than the first one. Maybe because I understand a little better what is going on now. Although there were still a lot of things that came as new surprises.

Sandis is now with her great-uncle, Talbur Gwenweg. But she finds that she is required to do things for him that are almost as bad as what she had to do for Kazen. She finds herself forced to flee from him too. And even though she doesn’t want to, because of how he betrayed her earlier, she finds herself joining up with Rone again.

They engage in a whirlwind of activities meant to destroy Kazen, and free the other vessels, but this just draws down new dangers and pursuits, and the results are not as satisfactory as Sandis had hoped. But in the end they finally learn what it all means, and what Kazen is trying to prove with Kolosos – although it’s still not clear what he hopes to gain by that. And they find that they are about to face the ultimate challenge.

I had this book from Kindle Unlimited, which in this case meant that I had access to both the Kindle and Audible formats. The narrators for the Audible version were good, although the female narrator sounded a little hysterical at times. That was probably on purpose, as I think Sandis was frequently somewhat hysterical in this book. However, it didn’t really serve her well, as it sometimes led her to rush into situations without thinking them through thoroughly first.

Could have been 5 stars but for one thing

Great story. I really enjoyed it except for one thing. There were two voices for the the character Rone. I hope for the third book they figure out how to use only one narrator for each character.

I appreciated that the author did not spend any time clueing people in to what happened in book one. Thank you for that. I thought book two was even stronger than book one (and I enjoyed that book a great deal) I can hardly wait for book three.

Occult, demons, love, what else could you want?

A great story. Occult, demons, bad guys, love, it is all here. The two readers made me hesitant as I cant stand audio book with multiple performers and sound effects. But this was just two good readers, one for the female lead, one for the male lead. Well done.

Solid but whiny

Rone I like. He’s not perfect but is working to fix his mistakes. Sandis? Whiny whiny so I had to put the book down several times. Jesus. Annoying!

Good book!

This book was my favorite in the series!! I loved the ending!!! I can’t really say a bad thing about this book. I loved the characters, world the author created and their journey. Some unexpected twists and again the ending was great!!

Great story, very good narration.

The story is a little less intriguing than the first book, and seems like it's just a filler/setup for the third. Great two person narration

Loved the series!

I thought the series was good a little repetitious but all in all it was all right.

Great story, but the female narrator over does it.

Love this storyline and the characters. But the female narrator simply over-acts on every single line she reads. Her voice is either quivering with fake fear or sounds like she is crying or ready to cry at all times. There is no down time, no regular breaks to simply...narrate. She never stops to over-acting through all three books. When the make narrator comes on its a pleasant break. I had listened to over a hundred audio books, and this series is the only one where the “acting” was do bad and distracting that I felt forced to write a review. Great story, fantastic writing on this novel. The partial delivery is beyond annoying.
