An 11-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City's most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Story
Everyone loves Mathias. Naturally, when he discovers it’s his destiny to save the world, he dives in headfirst, pulling his best friend, Aaslo, along for the ride. However, saving the world isn’t as easy, or exciting, as it sounds in the stories. The going gets rough, and folks start to believe their best chance for survival is to surrender to the forces of evil, which isn’t how the prophecy goes. At all. As the list of allies grows thin and the friends find themselves staring death in the face, they must decide how to become the heroes they were destined to be.

Story
You define life or it defines you. In Shawn Speakman’s case, it was both. Lacking health insurance and diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2011, Shawn quickly accrued a massive medical debt that he did not have the ability to pay. That’s when New York Times best-selling author Terry Brooks offered to donate a short story that Shawn could sell to help alleviate those bills—and suggested he ask the same of his other writer friends. Unfettered is the result: An anthology built in order to relieve that debt, featuring short stories by some of the best fantasy writers in the genre.

Narrator's voice fluctuations a tad problematic...
... His volume/tenor fluctuations, depending on the character, are not only irritating but at times border on the ridiculous... Shrill for intelligent people, baratone for the not so...

Narrator drove me nuts
Although a great story the narrator was over the top. I do 95% listening while driving and I was forever having to look over and adjust the volume every time there was a whisper and then back to normal or worse from whisper to loud exclamation. Not only discomforting but potentially dangerous.
As far as my description of "over the top" not only the whispering aspect but also the voices he chose for the characters. Any man of intelligence was given a high pitched whinny voice. Men of authority a resonating deep commanding voice. Being former military NCO I can assure you our leaders including myself did not exemplify that manner of voice. LOL
I am afraid I will pass on any audible book I come across where Mr. Devereaux is involved .

Liked it, Hated it, Loved It but....
....no matter what I did, I couldn't stop listening. Sometimes the writing was heavy-handed, repetitive phrases, an outlandish and confusing storyline, (I know I dropped a few threads) but I plowed along for 25 hours and ended up enjoying it immensely. Perhaps it's because I majored in Medieval English Literature, am a History Teacher, and a Sci-Fi devotee that even when bumpy I needed to know what happened to the characters in the end. That is the sign of a good book, is it not? May not be to everyone's taste it was mine.
