About this listen
Being a lesbian doesn’t come natural to everyone. That’s what Erika Kleinman learned during her sexual awakening in 1990s Seattle, when she began dating a host of butch women who were all too willing to show her the ropes. My Life as a Dyke recounts Kleinmans’ relationships with candor and humor while making one thing clear: no matter who you’re interested in, dating can be a nightmare.

Story
At some point, every one of us embarks on a journey to find love. We meet people, date, get into and out of relationships, all with the hope of finding someone with whom we share a deep connection. This seems standard now, but it’s wildly different from what people did even just decades ago. Single people today have more romantic options than at any point in human history. With technology, our abilities to connect with and sort through these options are staggering. So why are so many people frustrated?

Story
From breakout stand-up comedian Iliza Shlesinger comes a subversively funny collection of essays and observations on a confident woman's approach to friendship, singlehood, and relationships. "Girl Logic" is Iliza's term for the way women obsess over details and situations that men don't necessarily even notice. She describes it as a characteristically female way of thinking that appears to be contradictory and circuitous but is actually a complicated and highly evolved way of looking at the world.

Story
Clare and Henry have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was 36. They were married when Clare was 23 and Henry was 31. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous, his experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing.

Then a new family moves in across the street. Ted and Eva Wilson have three children and a fourth on the way, and their arrival reignites long-buried feelings in Billie.

Story
At nineteen Leah bears a remarkable resemblance to the young woman Adrienne once was. Which is why Adrienne knows the baby Leah is carrying is meant to be hers. But Leah's got ideas of her own: Her baby's going to get a life in California; why shouldn't she? All she wants is to live in Adrienne's house for a year after the baby's born and get a fresh start. It seems like a small price for Adrienne to pay to get their baby. And with Gabe suddenly onboard, what could possibly go wrong?

Lauren Weedman is not okay. She's living what should be the good life in sunny Los Angeles. After a gig as a correspondent with The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, she scored parts in blockbuster movies, which led to memorable recurring roles on HBO's Hung and Looking. She had a loving husband and an adorable baby boy. In these comedic essays, she turns a piercingly observant, darkly funny lens on the ways her life is actually not okay.

Whatever happened to sexual flamboyance and gender liberation, an end to marriage, the military, and the nuclear family? As backrooms are shut down to make way for wedding vows, and gay sexual culture morphs into “straight-acting dudes hangin’ out”, what are the possibilities for a defiant faggotry that challenges the assimilationist norms of a corporate-cozy lifestyle?

I'm the One That I Want, based on her show of the same name, is filled with dead-on insights about the experience of being a woman with attitude, of flowing with the highs and lows of life, and of creating one's own identity and acceptance. It is every bit as hilarious, shocking, and irreverent as she is.

Why would we need music if our lives were exactly as we wanted them to be? Karl Bender is a quiet guy who lives in three places: his bar, his apartment, and the cheap Mediterranean place on the corner that keeps him well fed with his daily portion of hummus and chicken shwarma. But that's all about to change. When he stumbles upon a time-traveling wormhole, Karl develops a business selling access to people who want to go back in time to hear their favorite bands.

She's Not Even A Lesbian?
Overall the story was ok, but the thing that really stuck out to me is the fact that she's not a lesbian. She explicitly states that Jordan was the only "butch" that she dated that she really connected with and loved but Jordan was a transman the whole time whether he had transitioned or not. With pleonasm, the author is technically a bisexual heteroromantic (partner's genitals don't matter but their gender expression does). I feel confident saying this because I'm a bisexual homoromantic woman that had a very similar situation happen when I was young. My first ex is a transman now and the way the author described feeling "out of sync" with cis female partners is how I felt with him even when he still identified as female. I think the author should have done a little more self-reflection. Just because you are in gay relationships doesn't mean you're actually gay and while it didn't feel transphobic the book was certainly ignorant.
The plus side is now I have another example of someone who is very firmly romantically attracted to one gender but ambivalent or enjoys both sexes.
TL;DR: Author isn't a lesbian/dyke but the story is mildly interesting

Thank you!!!!
This book was open and honest about the queer community. The characters experience is informative yet ever fluid. We are constantly learning about our selves and each other’ processes. Thank you Erika and Aimee did a wonderful job at narration.

Just don't
A. Boring narrative.
B. Dull narration.
C. Transphobic.
D. Biphobic.
E. There is literally not one interesting minute in this whole recording. This is the worst review I've ever written, if that tells you anything. Even the "wink wink I'm kinky" is a total snooze.

Appologistic, 'See, I'm not really a lesbian!'
Would you try another book from Erika Kleinman and/or Aimee Jolson?
Kleinman? No. Absolutely NO.Jolson? It will be hard to distance her from this book but her performance was good.
Has My Life as a Dyke turned you off from other books in this genre?
This is a search for absolution. Trying to clear her conscience in case her family, husband, or church found out about her forays into the 'dark side'.
Any additional comments?
So I listened to My Life as a Dyke and all I can tell ya is.. don't bother.. it was more like 'I experimented but really prefer guys' book and she (the author) was a kid.. fledgling sixteen year old adventures, Finding alternatives to immature boys with butch dykes. If you are looking for an uplifting book that helps you accept who you are then do NOT listen to this one. If you are looking for an arguments on how being a homosexual is not from nature but from nurture then maybe, maybe, you might find a crumb here to justify the hour. It's one hour I won't get back... How many books will Audible let you return?
