About this listen

Sarah Brandt is surprised when the son of her superstitious next-door neighbor asks for her professional advice. She is even more surprised to learn that mild-mannered Nelson Ellsworth has a mistress and has gotten her with child. When the young woman later turns up dead under the infamous hanging tree in Washington Square, Nelson is the prime suspect. Sarah knows that he must be innocent, and she enlists the help of detective Frank Malloy to help her find the real killer.

When the crime becomes public knowledge, Sarah and Frank must battle a legion of scandal-mongering newspaper reporters who are intent on trying and convicting Nelson, before he has even been charged with the crime. With the help of Nelson's mother and an ambitious reporter, Sarah must prove that, in this case at least, the victim may have been the victimizer.

My favorite narrator

The narrator brings the characters to life and draws me into the story. She is excellent to listen to.

The Awful Narrator is Growing on Me

Maybe the horrid narrator is growing on me or maybe I'm just getting used to her monotone expressionless angry all the time sounding voice. Who knows? At any rate, I like the characters and the mysteries and the time period so I'll stick with it for that only. You have been warned!

Great Series!

I’m so glad I came across this series; I’ve enjoyed every installment so far.

Unlike many other reviewers, I did not figure out whodunit right from the start and I had absolutely no guesses this time around – it was a really riveting mystery.

I am especially glad to see the Frank & Sarah story line heating up! Finally a kiss!

I hope the cliff-hanger ending was not just a tease and that Book 5 will concentrate on (and resolve) the mystery of Sarah’s late husband. I think while that question remains unanswered, F & S will jut dance around each other and they won’t develop a romance. I’m anxious for that angle to get going – their relationship and the impacts on their respective circles… especially his mother!

murder on Washington Square

Another story in the life of Sarah Brandt and Frank Malloy.
NYC at turn of the century. This author spins a believable story about that time period. Enjoyable.
