About this listen

My name is Miss Lucy. Let me tell you my story. It is a tale of a father’s despair, one man’s ambition, in a place where morality and mortality waver.

It was the summer of 1890 when theatre manager and writer Bram Stoker arrived in Whitby. After an arduous theatre tour, his stay was respite before returning to London. However, what he discovered enthralled and beguiled.

Mr. Stoker and I met each dawn on the East Cliff in the shadow of Whitby Abbey. On a bench overlooking the sea, Bram soon became the confidant I had yearned for. So, in faith, I shared the events that tormented my youth and left me haunted. And after that chance encounter, I will forever live within the pages of what became Bram Stoker’s masterpiece, for it was my story that inspired Dracula.

A Masterful Retelling of an All-time Classic

I’m not quite sure where to start, but I’ll say I absolutely loved this story. This is the fourth book of Wright’s I have listened to and this one went beyond all expectations.

Wright’s creative mastery of gothic prose blended perfectly into this tale that takes a unique twist to Bram Stoker’s Dracula for it is this story that will inspire Stoker to write his Dracula. How’s that for a new spin on a classic? I’ll tell you, it is simply “genius.” Wright provides just enough horror to get the listener’s blood pumping as the vampire emerges but I won’t give any spoilers. You’ll have to read/listen for yourself.

The narration by Lesley Dessalles is wonderful, her voice blends perfectly with the gothic horror prose. I expect I’ll be listening to more of her works.

I’ll definitely keep listening and reading more of Becky Wright’s works. If 10 out of 5 stars was possible, that would be my rating.

Were Stokers ideas his own?

I pressed play and was instantly enthralled. To get the feeling of being back in Dracula’s era was incredible. Becky Wright really transports you.
This is the story of Lucy, and her meeting Bram Stoker before he wrote Dracula. Lucy tells her story through a written journal.
If you like Dracula at all you need to read this book. This has a feminine touch but yet there were several things that left me stunned, dumbfounded, I had always assumed that Becky was a nice person, but she obviously has a little Devil inside

Pre-Dracula Stoker

Lucinda's (Lucy) story unfolds as she shares her Diary with her new acquaintance, Bram Stoker. Her macabre tale becomes the catalyst for Stoker's Dracula, but don't assume anything about vampires or other paranormal elements within. Very dark, atmospheric tone carries throughout, with plenty of twists, without end...
