About this listen

Marianne

Marianne has disconcertingly open manners and a liveliness that Miss Wolfraston deplores. When she visits her aunt in Cheltenham, these traits inevitably lead her into a series of scrapes.

Lord Cranbourne has already been disappointed in love once and is in no hurry to find a bride. Annoyed at his sister’s matchmaking attempts, he accompanies his friend Sir Horace Bamber to Cheltenham. He expects to be heartily bored. Then, he meets Marianne.

Both have lessons to learn; not least that no one is quite what they seem.

Miss Hayes

Seven years ago, Miss Hayes’ world was turned upside down when she lost her father, her betrothed, and any prospect of a comfortable future. Forced to make her own way in the world, she became a teacher at Miss Wolfraston’s Seminary for Young Ladies.

She has no wish to reenter the society that turned its back on her. But when she is asked to be a companion to her pupil, Miss Charlotte Fletcher, her affection for the young lady overcomes her reservations.

As ghosts from her past come back to haunt her, feelings long buried begin to surface. By confronting her demons, can she begin to forge a new future?

Georgianna

Georgianna bids adieu to her friend Marianne and returns home with a heavy heart. Before their friendship blossomed, she had been a stranger to affection. Her mama is enraged when she discovers Georgianna has spurned the advances of an extremely eligible man and sends her to her impoverished aunt, hoping that she will realise just how much a lady needs a wealthy husband, regardless of her feelings for him.

Georgianna embarks on a journey of self-discovery and meets two very different gentlemen who are far from dull. Her head tells her one is ineligible and her heart that the other would never make her happy.

When she suddenly finds herself facing disgrace, it seems she must make a choice. But should she listen to her head or her heart?

Enjoyable

Enjoyable regency stories. I liked that the stories had multiple romances in each book. Keep close attention to names, as there are many characters, some referred to by title, first and/or last name. My only complaint is that the Miss Wolfraston's ladies are 16 and 17 year old girls. I know that marriage happened at a younger age in years past but it made it difficult to believe that these young, sheltered teenagers could be so sophisticated and then happily married off to older men. In the stories, the girls and men were well matched but I had to suspend reality to believe it.

Nice once you’re into it a bit

The story was a bit slow to hold my attention but once a little deeper into the stories it held my interest with no problem.

Lovely

This is a delightful set of stories. Clean and interesting with likable characters. The narrator is very good, although I’ve never heard the name Charlotte pronounced the way she says it. She captures the tone and nuance quite well. Sir Horace was a surprise. By the second book, he steals the show. This three-set was worth the credit. The characters had depth and growth, and I hope to find more from this author on Audible.

Delightful!!

Wonderful narration, very engaging stories with positive, interesting characters. Plots good and don't rely on annoying misunderstandings etc as is commonly used in this genre.

Excellent Narration of Traditional Regencies

Ms Hambly writes in the Georgette Heyer mold, meaning that her stories are traditional romances (no sex), have interesting characters, real dialogue, details of the period, and occasionally humorous scenes. I really enjoy fun (or comic) Regencies which is why I enjoyed the first story, Marianne, the most, but all three stories are good regencies. Another enjoyable element of the series is the tie-in to Ms Hambly’s bachelor series, so you get to see the couple of a previous story in the newest one. Better than an epilogue in my opinion. And then there is Helen Taylor to read the stories. She is great.

Clean and entertaining

I really enjoyed this series; romance, a little mystery, and happily ever. Sometimes it is hard to find clean listens/reads. If you enjoyed this you may like some other clean historical Victorian, Regency, and Georgian era romance authors; Alice Chetwynd Ley, Sally Britton, Alicia Cameron, Jaima Fixsen, Arlem Hawks, Mimi Matthews, Suzanne G. Rogers, Sheri Cobb South, and of course Jane Austen & Georgette Heyer. They all have their own unique style.

Enjoyable and engaging

Very enjoyable and not predictable as one might guess. Each story showing the growth of each personality learning from their mistakes and gaining a stronger sense of self.
